I., N. Y., June 29. The featured Previous Handicap at Aqueduct this afternoon proved to be a horse race well worth the attention of the 17,541 fans who sweltered in the stands, but it was some time after the race before they knew who was the ultimate winner, as Ted Atkinson, aboard Mrs. Ames, claimed foul against Bobby Permane on Irish Tar, who led her under the wire by a neck. After a brief deliberation the stewards took down Irish Tars number, relegating him to last place for bearing out against the Long-champs Farms filly in the final sixteenth. That made Mrs. Ames the winner and moved Allen T. Simmons Flying Doug, who had finished only a neck farther back, into second place. Stephen Messanas Faiseur, who inherited third place, was only a half length farther back, a head before Joe W. Browns Ravenala .while Tex Martin was only another neck farther back in this compact finish. Permane Gets "Buggy" Ride It was announced after the race that Irish Tar had broken down shortly before the finish, which probably caused his bearing put. Permane was driven back in the "buggy without the fringe" to meet the stewards. Mrs. Ames paid 1.20 and was timed in 1:12. Irish Tar had been the favorite and there were some rather uncalled for booes of the stewards decision. The field for the Previous raced in a compact group for the entire six furlongs of this ,500 dash with the exception of Tex Martin, who lacked early speed. Irish Tar, Flying Doug, Faiseur, alternated in the lead by narrow margins with all the rest, but Tex Martin closely grouped behind them, going down the backstretch and around the bend. Curving into the stretch Irish Tar on the inside had a slight advantage over Flying Doug, who was a length before Mrs. Ames. Roused by Atkinson the Long-champs Farms filly responded strongly and probably would have won by herself but for the interference. Only about two lengths separated the entire field of six at the end of this dash. There were two spills in the hurdle race that was third on the program. Penny Packer, who swerved at the first three obstacles, fell at the fourth when he was in the lead. Jockey Angus Scott was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital with a possible concussion. Coming round the second time, Atom Smasher hobbled and lost W. Sheppard at the same brush. This boy was unhurt. The race was won by Mrs. T. J. Carrolls Arrive on Time, who beat R. V. N. Gambrills Ducker, who led Edgar Horns Bar Ship by another three lengths, while Mrs. A. B. Letelliers Gala Reigh was a tiring fourth. The others were strung out for a sixteenth. There was an incident in the second race, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, when the gate failed to open properly before J. E. Mahoney, Jr.s Valdina Craft. After the race it was announced that all tickets held on this colt, as well as Daily Double tickets coupling him with Heesa- date, would be refunded although he finished eighth in the field of nine starters. Bud Grey attempted, as usual to set the pace in the race, opened up a wide lead, but, was run down by the favored Okapi Lancer in the stretch drive and was beaten a length and one-half. Seal Rock closed fast for third honors, while Mr. Pharned was a tiring fourth. Okapi Lancer paid .60 and the Daily Double, reduced slightly after the refund on Valdina Craft, was 4.70. The race was timed in 1:12.
