A. in in Acorn Acorn Whips Albulil by Head Margin As Lincoln Ushers In Meeting * Favored Letellier Gelding Gets Up in Closing Strides Of Sprint at Hawthorne HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 12.— Jack S. L., racing for Mrs. J. S. Letellier and fresh from a victory in the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs, accounted for the six-furlong Crete Handicap that featured the opening day program at this point, but the son of Jack High had his work cut out to eke out a head verdict over H. I. Schmitz Albulil, who dominated the running to the final few yards. Finishing fast on the inside, Jesting Fox was third in the field of eight for Willard T. Beezley, and was slightly less than a length back of Albulil in a thrilling finish. Jess Higley rode the winner, who was top weight of the band under 119 pounds, and he sent his charge over the distance in 1:12. On the strength of his recent Kentucky victory, Jack S. L. was installed choice to return .60. The score of Jack S. L., who has been a very consistent sort, was his fifth of the year if 13 starts, and he earned ,725. D. C. Wilhelms Bubbling Easy, weakening after making a stiff challenge in the early stretch, lasted to finish in a dead-heat for fourth, with River Divide Farms fast-finishing Brief Sigh. Crowd of 12,998 in Stands Partly cloudy weather greeted a crowd of 12,998, who turned out to welcome the return of the sport to this West Side course. The race was a ding-dong affair from start to finish and the early speed that en-p abled Albulil to take a short lead was not sufficient to permit him to draw away. Forum raced lapped on the leader and on the inside around the turn, where Jack S. L. moved up to supplant him in the runner-up position. Jack S. L. was placed to stiff pressure as he moved up on the outside of Albulil to race lapped on him, but Albulil was loathe to surrender and the pair staged a stretch-long duel right to the wire. Ben Fogelsons Willie E., the favorite, was an easy winner of the Pansy Walker Purse, a dash of six furlongs that was best of the supporting races. Dominating the running from the outset, the winner loped across the finish line three easy lengths before Nellie Weed, who represented Mr. ; and Mrs. P. J. Sopsic. The real race was for place honors as Nellie Weed was only a nose before Southway Stables Alar. Jockey Fred A. Smith rode the winner who | paid .60. There was considerable excitement prior to the running of the race, when Princess [ Rena unseated her rider, Hank Manifold, at the post and ran off five furlongs. She 1 was ordered withdrawn from the field and all wagers on her were refunded. Manifold was uninjured. Jockey Tommy Bates, who finished up 1 at Sportsmans Park with a riding triple, came right back to annex both ends of the j Daily Double when he drove W. H. Bishops ; Club Car to a head victory in the opener, j then went on to score astride Poodoo. In the third race, Lexbrook Stable dis-; played a likely colt in Showdown, who : came from far back in his initial racing ; venture to handily turn back 10 other non- winning two-year-olds. The fourth race saw F. M. DeMarys Raydel lead in Victory ! Blue, the favored Credentials and nine • others. In this, Mrs. E. M. Kohouts Ile-1 fetchit fell at the sixteenth pole and jockey • Joe Boucher was thrown heavily. He was : taken to Norwegian-American Hospital for x-ray examination.
