1 JOCKEY A. SNIDER— Scored with three of his mounts, including the two Calumet Farm winners, on yesterdays Havre de Grace Program. ; | [ 1 1 j ; j : ; ! • • : Pep Well and Airy Give Calumet Havre Double New Track Records Set by Both; Former Victor in Philadelphia HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 12.— The famous devils red and blue silks of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm flew high, wide and handsome as the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association ushered in the second of its two spring meetings before an enthusiastic throng of approximately 7,500 here today. Calumet provided two winners on the opening day card, but its most important triumph was that scored by Pep Well, who shattered the track record for six furlongs when he dashed to a close victory over eight stanch rivals in the thirty-fourth running of the 0,000 Philadelphia Handicap, which was being run at the six-furlong distance for the first time since 1919. Earlier on the program the juvenile filly, Airy, scored in the Calumet silks. Superbly rated by Al Snider, who was fashioning his third riding score of the afternoon, Pep Well drove between horses entering the stretch and fairly sizzled through the final eighth of a mile to be timed the six furlongs over the fast track in 1:10%, to clip a fifth of a second off the old standard. Pep Well, as third choice, paid 2.40. Only a neck behind the winner at the wire was Shamrock Stables Air Patrol, who closed full of run in the final eighth and held a length margin over Rippey, who was third. Rippey was the pacemaker Continued on Page Thirty-One , i I 1 1 j • 5 r J Pep Well, Airy Give Calumet Double at Havre de Grace Continved from Page One entering the stretch, but faltered slightly in the final drive. Todays triumph marked Pep Wells third successive stake victory, and he earned ,960 by dint of his record-breaking Philadelphia run. Pep Well was away with the field, but Snider was content to reserve his mount behind the pace as William Helis Rippey and Christiana Stables Sea Snack cut out an early pace which was to prove destruc-j tive to both of them. Jockey Martin, astride Air Patrol, also used good judgment in riding a waiting race with that gelding. After holding the lead along the back-1 stretch and giving way to Rippey, Sea Snack exhibited another burst of speed turning for home and took an advantage of about half a length. This, indeed, was her final fling, as Pep Well and Air Patrol drove between her and the faltering Rippey to battle it out in the final sixteenth. Air Patrol proved a game and worthy opponent for the Calumet sprinter, but Pep Well was not to be denied as Snider drove him to his well-earned score, Trainer H. A. "Jimmy" Jones, Calumet Farm trainer, unveiled a swift juvenile filly in Airy, a bay daughter of Bull Lea — Proud One, who set a new track record of :58% for five furlongs in charging to a popular victory over rivals in the first race. Charging between horses to wrest the lead near the sixteenth pole, Airy drew out swiftly in the closing strides to win by two and one-half lengths going away from Brookfield Farms Itsabet, who had set the pace from soon after the start. Itsabet just did hang on to save runner-up honors by a head over J. M. Lees Smajor, who closed second choice.
