Jack Jack S. S. L. L. Gains Gains Narrow Narrow Crete Crete Score; Score; Sixteen Sixteen Oppose Oppose Carolyn Carolyn A. A. in in Acorn Acorn Arcaro Has Mount On Whitaker Filly Harmonica, But Why Not Should Prove Contenders In Mile Event at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 12. — Seventeen three-year-old fillies have been named overnight to dispute the seventeenth running of the 5,000 Acorn Stakes at one mile here tomorrow, but the list unfortunately does not include C. V. Whitneys champion First Flight. Track attaches had declared on Saturday that the 1946 juvenile champion would definitely make her seasonal debut in the classic mile run and that Eddie Arcaro had been engaged to ride the daughter of Mahmoud. Instead, First Flight is remaining in the barn and Arcaro is to ride B. F. Whitakers Carolyn A., who will probably be the favorite. This miss won the Louisiana Derby during the winter and was a fast-finishing second behind Phalanx in the Wood Memorial, but failed to concede 17 pounds to John J. Watts Harmonica in her last appearance here. She meets that filly again tomorrow, but at level weights. Another formidable filly in this edition of the Acorn is King Ranchs But Why Not, who won the Pimlico Oaks as recently as last Friday and won her previous New York engagement. But Why Not is one of the horses Robert J. Kleberg acquired in the split-up and subsequent drawing for the stable of the late Col. E. R. Bradley and appears to be considerably the best to come out of that dispersal. Strong Opposition This trio seems the best of the large band in the Acorn and are sure to attract the most support in the mutuels. They will be opposed by Mrs. E. E. D. Shaffers Judy-Rae, Glen Riddle Farms Merry Lass, Mrs. Whitney Stones By Sea, Ogden Phipps Graciously, Walter P. Chryslers Stage Mother, William Zieglers Flaring Home, Walter M. Jeffords Snow Goose, Leo Gerngross Sylvia Dear, Hal Price Headleys Check Please, Alfred G. Vander-bilts Now and Again, Phipps Quarantaine, A. C. Ernsts Alrenie, E. P. Taylors Picardy Belle, and Harry LaMontagnes Conniver. All will carry 121 pounds with the exception of Flaring Home, who has 116. Of this large group of outsiders, Snow Goose, Picardy Belle and Conniver won their last starts, but did not beat much and have been beaten too often by ordinary fillies themselves to be taken very seriously. Merry Lass and By Sea finished third and fourth, respectively, behind Harmonica and Carolyn A. Check Please has not raced in the East and her last appearance was a poor effort in the Kentucky Oaks at Louisville, but she comes from a dangerous barn. Ted Atkinson will be in the saddle. Johnny Adams has drawn the mount on Harmonica, while the stable jockey, Warren Mehrtens, will be on But Why Not.
