Faultless Faultless Easily Easily Wins Wins Withers Withers Mile; Mile; Gee Gee Whiz Whiz Accounts Accounts For For Joliet Joliet Stakes Stakes Calumet Colt Coasts to Finish Before Brabancon, Stage Kid Preakness Victor Comes From Behind Fast Early Pace of Jet Pilot to Prevail as Favorite With Crowd of 49,810; My Request Beats Odds-On Royal Blood in Juvenile Upset BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 17.— Calumet Farms Faultless fully confirmed his Preakness triumph and stamped himself the best of the three-year-olds when he coasted to a length and three-quarters victory over Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon in the seventy-second running of the 5,000 Withers Mile at Belmont Park today. Earl Sandes Stage Kid finished three lengths away, in third place, just a head before Maine Chance Farms Derby winner, Jet Pilot. Doug Dodson, as usual, rode the big brown son of Bull Lea, by Unerring. A solid favorite with the packed crowd of 49,810, Faultless paid .30, .00 and .50 across the board. Time for the mile was a moderate 1:38ft, with the last ►quarter being run in a slow :26%. Faultless, who was winning his eighth race in 11 starts this year in a campaign that started at Hialeah, added 0,950 to earlier earnings of 92,720, all but 0,940 of which was gleaned this season. The success of the favorite in the Withers atoned in a large measure for the defeat of Royal Blood at odds-on in the Juvenile Stakes that preceded the Withers and was won by My Request. First Quarter Run in :22Vs Owners Choice and Jet Pilot indulged in a murderous pace duel in the Withers, racing heads apart in the run down the far side as they cut out a first quarter in :221/5 and a half mile in :45. Jet Pilot gradually drew away from Owners Choice, while Brabancon was a distant third before Blue Border, Faultless, Uncle Remus and Stage Kid. Nearing the stretch turn, Owners Choice came on again with a final bid, drawing almost level with Jet Pilot as Blue Border moved past Brabancon into third place. Just as Blue Border appeared to have some sort of chance, Faultless drove up with a rush and knocked him off stride, then went on to take command with ease. Blue Border and Owners Choice dropped out of the picture entirely and Jet Pilot only held on for a few strides in the stretch. As Faultless coasted to the wire with smooth, powerful strides and Dodson sitting perfectly still, Brabancon once more turned in his customary stretch rush that has landed him in the money in five of his seven starts this year, but has invariably fallen just short of success. Stake Kid didnt come into the picture until the field swung around the final bend into the stretch, where he moved from last to fourth place, and outfinished the weary Jet Pilot in the final yards. Jet Pilot, incidentally, looked well going on the track, but appeared to be walking on eggs, putting his feet down very gingerly. The crowd was in a wagering mood, sending 31,595 through the machines on the Continued on Page Three Faultless Easily Wins Withers Mile; Juvenile Stakes Goes to My Request Calumets Preakness Victor Triumphs in Clear Before 49,810 Patrons at Belmont Continued from Page One Withers and 58,330 on the Juvenile Stakes. Ben F. Whitakers homebred My Request scored a smashing victory in the seventy-first running of the 0,000 Juvenile Stakes that preceded the Withers, driving to the wire two lengths before Maine Chance Farms Royal Blood, the odds-on favorite. Greentree Stables Witch Hunt finished well to be third a length and a half behind the runner-up and nearly a length before Irving Gushens Andys Glory. Neglected in the wagering, though he had won his last Jamaica start by five lengths, My Request paid 8.60. The time for the five furlongs on the Widener straightaway was :573/5, precisely the same required by Eternal War in last years edition in which the favorite First Flight also finished second. Ronnie Nash rode the son of Requested. Royal Blood went to the front at the start of the Juvenile, but promptly began to bear over toward the rail, colliding with My Request as that colt ran straight and true. Andys Glory was close to the leaders on the outside while Quickset, Witch Hunt, Noble Hero, Eternal Lark and Word of Honor followed in a fairly compact group. My Request drew level with Royal Blood at the eighth pole and the favorite again bore over on him, but the son of Requested forced his way past and quickly drew clear. As My Request opened a daylight lead, Royal Blood continued to veer towards the rail while Andys Glory began to tire badly on the outside and Witch Hunt came on strongly. My Request is the second stakes winner of the New York season by the young stallion Requested, Mrs. Moody Jolleys Picnic Lunch having captured the Rosedale Stakes for juvenile fillies at Jamaica in April. The Juvenile added 2,100 to the Whitaker coffers.
