Loyal Legion Trounces Four Rivals in Potomac Jeffords Racer Whips Mityme by Six to Avenge Recent Setback HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 17.— Walter M. Jeffords formidable three-year-old gelding, Loyal Legion, registered his second and most important victory of the new season here today, when he completely routed four stanch rivals in the twenty-ninth running of the one mile and a furlong Potomac Stakes. Sharing the plaudits of the estimated week-end throng of 16,000 was hard-riding Al Snider, who was registering a riding triple aboard the Jeffords stalwart, marking the third time this week the veteran Canadian reinsman has pulled the "hat trick." Wresting the lead from William S. La-brot, Jr.s, determined Repand midway on the final turn, Loyal Legion literally ran away and hid from his opposition in the stretch, scoring by six lengths going away from Cedar Farms Mityme, to gain complete satisfaction for the narrow defeat he had absorbed from the latter in last weeks Survivor Stakes at Pimlico. Two lengths farther back in third place came Christiana Stables Camargo, the only filly in the race, who staged a good run in the stretch to finish ahead of the faltering Repand and Mrs. E. duPont Weirs disappointing Royal Governor, who was an odds-on favorite. Superbly rated by the crafty Snider, Loyal Legion cut loose with a flourish entering the stretch and gained momentum with each succeeding stride to complete the long journey over the lightning-fast track in 1:50% under his 117-pound impost. Loyal Legion raced levely-weighted with Mityme, but the Cedar Farm stalwart was completely outrun in the final eighth, after moving up smartly to press the pace approaching the quarter pole. He paid .60 as second choice. Royal Governor, who finished third in the Survivor, beaten two heads by Mityme and Loyal Legion, closed a pronounced favorite, despite the fact he was giving those two adversaries three pounds in the weights. The Weir colorbearer never was a sharp contender today and faded steadily in the closing drive, to bring up the rear. Loyal Legion was in the thick of contention from the start, remaining within striking distance of Repands swift early pace until Snider elected to launch his successful charge shortly after leaving the back-stretch. Assuming the lead with apparent ease, Loyal Legion was a length in the lead at the top of the lane and increased his margin swiftly in the final eighth of a mile. Mityme ran a good, game race, launching a bold charge before succumbing to the winners speed in the home lane. Carson Kirk rated the Cedar Farm stalwart to the quarter pole, then set sail after the leader, but to no avail. Camargo trailed the field for more than a mile, and although she picked up tiring opponents, the bay filly was running strongly at the finish.
