i Star Reward Romps to Easy Triumph Over Three Rivals in Grosse Pointe Dixiana Racer Runs Fastest * Three-Quarters of Detroit Meet, Being Timed in 7:70% FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 1. — Star Reward, Charles T. Fishers Dix-iana-bred five-year-old son of Reaping Reward and Far Star, romped to an easy victory here today in the ,500 Grosse Pointe Handicap. Well handled by Robert Lee Baird, Star Reward coasted to the end of the six-furlong stake with two and one-half lengths to spare over Bernard J. Bax King Bay. Four and one-half lengths back, John A. Kinards Eternal Bomb took third honors by a length and a half over Hal Price Headleys Plumper, the only other starter. Shouldering the topweight burden of 122 pounds, Star Reward, who finished third in the Curtain Up Handicap here inaugural day, stepped the fastest three-quarters mile of the current Motor City season, hanging up an impressive 1:10% for the sprint distance. The Dixiana horse was choice in the totalisator at 3 to 5. Star Reward picked up ,236 for his owner, the latter figure being the winners end of the gross purse of ,970. King Bay went to the front immediately after starter Johnny Morrissey sent the small Grosse Point field away in good alignment, but Star Reward moved right along and 3aird kept the ultimate victor within striking distance of the Bax racer to the sfcretch. Plumper displayed a flash of brief speed in the run to the upper turn and Eternal Bomb began a mild bid after leaving the backstretch. Approaching the stretch, Baird shook up ► — _ Star Reward a bit and the Dixiana horse moved by King Bay with ease and drew clear, reaching the wire with speed in reserve. King Bay held on willingly after being displaced and he was an easy -second over the weary Eternal Bomb while Plumper, who was sent to the inside for the drive, failed to rally and was soundly beaten in the race. Ideal weather conditions and a fast track prevailed today and an active crowd of 8,798 patrons were on hand for the mid-week sport. The track was fast throughout the entire matinee and running times for some of the better events were above, average. O. Frank Woodwards" Kosadus, a homebred son of Isolater and Sweepila, coasted to a clever victory in the Gratiot Purse, chief supporting attraction. Confidently handled by Jimmy Duff, Kosadus stepped to the end of the one mile and 70 yards two lengths in front of Mrs. Mabel Scholts Lovely Nymph, who was the betting choice in the field of nine three-year-olds. Two lengths farther back, Suffazon, from the C. A. ONeil, Jr., establishment, finished third. Lovely Nymph made a brisk pace during the initial six furlongs of the Gratiot and withstood a brisk bid by You Are You before reaching the final turn. Entering the stretch with a short lead, the favorite continued quite willingly but she did not have the stamina to hold the fast finishing Kosadus, bowing in the final furlong. Suffazon raced evenly to garner the short end of the purse and Fish Fry went well enough to get fourth money. L. Birchs Good Heavens proved best of the eight ordinary three-year-olds in the one mile and 70 yards opener but the Plucky Play filly was strong handled through the stretch to withstand Joseph A. Goodwins Hot Chocolate beating the latter by a head margin. E. P. Taylors Bennington took a front-running victory in the five-furlong second race. Bennington scored by three and one-half length over Mrs. George C. Whites Dixie Flyer. Bennington was claimed from his breeder and owner by the Mrs. Lottie Wolf Stable. Henry Forrests Fine Art stamped himself as a better than average two-year-old when he drove to his third straight victory in the five furlongs fourth race, registering a neat :59% for the distance. Forwardly placed from the outset by Lois C. Cook, Fine Art gave way momentarily to Dickey Stables favored Growing Up nearing the stretch but came again in the drive and beat the latter by a length margin. Growing Up was easily second best.
