I., N. Y., June 1. — Up Beat, the Isidore Bieber four-year-old who was acquired from the Green-tree Stable via the claiming route for 5,000 last year, was a driving winner of the Roseben Handicap today. In winning, Up Beat sped down the six furlongs of the Widener Course in 1:08% and enrolled his name as ~ joint holder of the track record with True North and Bimlette. Ridden by Hedley Woodhouse, Up Beat dominated the running throughout and at the finish led home the Brookfield Farms Istan, while in third place was John Barry Ryans Pipette. Mose Rauzins Buzfuz was fourth while the highweight and popular choice Rippey finished sixth. The winners margin was three-quarters of a length and the prize to the winning owner was 2,050. Up Beat carried 120 pounds, bringing his seasonal racing record to four victories and his earnings to 5,205. The Roseben, named for that doughty sprinter of four decades back, carried an added value of 5,000 ahd was the salient feature of the afternoons program. Nine started in the race, the sole withdrawal being Yankee Hill. Rippey, on the strength of his Toboggan Handicap score, in which he shouldered 129 pounds and trounced much the same company, was installed the choice. In todays outing he showed signs of bearing out and when roused failed to gain on the leaders. Clear weather and a fast track prevailed and a crowd of 18,491 witnessed the running. Woodhouse in Saddle The field left the starting stalls at the top of the Widener Course in what appeared to be a good alignment. Woodhouse broke Up Beat in stride and the son of Pharamond H. displayed a high turn of speed. He passed the first quarter in :22* and continued this dazzling pace to the half-mile marker which was timed in :44. Pressing him in the early stages were Pipette, King Rhymer and Istan, while Macbeth, Buzfuz, Pinebloom, Pennant Day and Rippey were several lengths to the rear. There was scant change in the positions as the leaders passed the junction of the main track, where the winner was under steady restraint, although showing a slight tendency to bear towards the inside. Entering the final furlong he had open daylight before his company. In the meatime, Buzfuz had begun to move up on the inside while Istan, under pressure, was beginning Continued on Page Two . In the final furlong, Buzfuz showed a tendency to drift toward the outside and in so doing bore over on Pine-bloom. Pipette, in the meantime, had drifted toward the extreme outside and under pressure was holding on stoutly. In the final sixteenth, Woodhouse roused Up Beat to fend off the fast-closing Istan while Pipette managed to outlast Buzfuz by the proverbial inch. Pinebloom was lifth, Rippey sixth, Macbeth seventh, King Rhymer eighth and Pennant Day last as the field passed the finish line.
