Churchill Downs By Joe Hirsch Press Respects Roman Fans Deflection Green Never Kids Himself About Horses Constantin Trainer Has Promising String StringCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 2 A Sensible Assessment Every third phone call made to Churchill Downs during the early part of the week was from someone who had a horse he wanted to enter in the Derby 6r maybe it just seemed that way because the probable starters board in publicity di ¬ rector Brownie Leachs office had become inadequate before the week end was concluded At any rate a horse coming out of the Derby is real news here and Stan ¬ ley Greenes announcement this morning of Roman Fans with ¬ drawal was greeted in the work ¬ ing press aerie with proper respect Actually the explanation is quite simple The thoroughly realistic Greene an astute horseman at 33 saw his colt run in Tuesdays Trial and wasnt the least impressed by his performance While he enjoys a laugh as well or better than the next man Stanley Greene never kids himself about his horses horsesFormer Former Halfback With a Big Stable StableOn On March 1 Greene took oveFthe training of the Eugene Constantin Jr string and has 18 head here for the Texas oil man Constantin has been in racing for over 15 seasons has owned a number of good horses such as Royal Bay Gem and his stable is welcome at any track in the country When he decided to change trainers last year there were over half a hundred ap ¬ plicants for the job Greene with a fine record and reputation throughout jthe East as one of the ablest of our younger conditioners was Constantins selection To look at Greene now it would be difficult to imagine that he was once a 150pound halfback for a small col ¬ lege in Northern Virginia hes put together like a heavyweight boxer On expert athlete in school he still holds a regional basketball record of 53 points in a single game gameGreenes Greenes whole background and his environment led him to the race track He was raised in the heart of the Virginia hunt country his dad rode and trained jumpers for many years his brother Marvin condi ¬ tions a large public stable in the East and his mother is a devoted racing fan When he left school Stanley rode chasers for a while until the weight began to pile up and eventually he took some horses and began to carve himself a career For the past several seasons he raced through New England and Michigan with the stock of the Detroit automobile man Jerry Lynch and has always ranked prominently on the list of leading trainers wherever hes been The Constantin horses wintered in Kentucky and Greene is bringing them along conservatively through the changeable spring weather pointing for the heavy summer campaign ahead When this meeting is over the stable goes to Monmoutti Park and except for an invasion of Sara ¬ toga will remain in New Jersey all season seasonHiil Hiil Prince Colt Looks Promising PromisingOf Of the 18 head he has on the grounds seven of Con ¬ stantins horses are twoyearolds He is an active pur ¬ chaser at the yearlings sales and also breeds a few himself frequently boarding his mares at the farm where a desirable sire stands None of the youngsters have started yet almost all are just about ready to come to the races The best may be a handsome son of Hill Prince from a Fighting Fox mare named Prince Dingo who cost Constantin 12500 at Keeneland last year Greene reports that he has impressive action and has staked him liberally for the summer and fall There is also a Cosmic Bomb colt a homebred by Re ¬ quested an Ardan colt a Royal Gem filly and a Spy Song colt who is still on the farm The older horses in ¬ clude Roman Fan who is eligible to show a lot of im ¬ provement this summer and a couple of solid four yearolds by Royal Gem n and Ambers Folly This last is a fouryearold Ambiorix gelding who never won a race last year but still earned 30000 He hasnt been out since last spring and was believed to have ringbone But the alert Greene noted that at odd hours Ambers Folly has a habit of standing with one foot on top of another He designed a special leather boot which prevents this and Ambers Folly is now training in good order
