New Jersey 1 By William Phillips 1 1Eastgate Eastgate Finally Reaching His Potential Gave Semblance of Class in Recent Outing Calumet Colt Has Been Enigma to Handlers HandlersGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 2 Maybe just maybe Calumet Farms Eastgate finally is nromise There was the difference of day and night between the manner in which he ran last win ¬ ter in Florida and his perfor ¬ mance here on Tuesday The sophomore son of Bull Lea and Ralda she by Sickle looked like a real runner when Henry Moreno woke him up with a heavy thumping in the stretch and he drew off to beat some shifty rivals by better than five lengths Eastgate has been a con trainer Jimm Jones A worry because he has believed the colt might be potentially the best of the several promising young racers in Mrs Gene Markeys fashionable stable but Eastgate has never proved it in competition He was green and slow coming to hand in his training as a juvenile and was unplaced in the first three starts of his career The first time Eastgate performed over the Garden State Park course he was the easiest kind of a winner and Jon s toyed with the idea of starting him in the worlds richest race The Garden State The triumph was at six furlongs and Jones ultimately decided that Eastgate was not ready to tackle the best colts in the country at the more exacting mile and a sixteenth sixteenthJones Jones instead saddled Eastgate for a sixfurlong triumph on the same program as The Garden State With this preparation he went on to win the mile and a sixteenth Spalding Lowe Jenkins at Laurel but fin ¬ ished fourth over a sloppy track in the Pimlico Futurity In Florida the colt started eight times and it was just one disappointment on top of another as he utterly failed to show any willingness We were with Jimmy and B A Jones when Eastgate gave a miserable effort at Gulfstream Park in his last Florida outing and Jimmy professed himself absolutely bewildered saying I have tried everything with this colt and now I just dont know what to do The only thing I can think is that he does not like the deep and cuppy cushion on these Florida tracks and if he doesnt show better when we ship to Jersey Ill just give up upFlorida Florida Races Precluded Derby Chance ChanceHis His Florida performances excluded any chance of propping Eastgate for the Kentucky Derby which he may well have been pointed for along with Fabius and Pintor Lea if he had raced to expectations last winter Jones is in Kentucky at present but we are certain that after Eastgates triumph yesterday he will plan on grooming the colt for the richer sophomore events during the summer Before leaving he informed us that if Eastgate went well on Tuesday that he would be a starter this Saturday in the 25000added Dela ¬ ware Valley Stakes Eastgate will have his work cut out for him in this sixfurlong fixture and we make no predictions on how well he will fare other than the race should do him a world of good Even though he ran in 110 here Tuesday it is our contention that his best races will be over a longer distance of ground Besides he will be meeting such an accomplished sprinter as Decathlon who is considered one of the prime short runners of his age and looms a staunch favorite in the weekend feature featureLou Lou Stephans has taken over the contract of appren ¬ tice Harold Brice from the W Forelich stables The 21yearold Brooklynite has given his book to agent Bill Terrill and hopes to soon begin his riding activities Among the horses brought here by Tommy Heard Jr from Laurel is Ann Uhlars Anns Love who is being pointed for the 30000added Camden Handicap on May 19 Dixie McKinleys Mr Patrick a Delaware Valley Stakes candidate arrived with six stablemates irom Lexington Willie Smokey Saunders who rode Omaha to fame in the 1935 Kentucky Derby is acting here as agent for jockey Robert Louis Stevenson J D Mooney who piloted the great Black Gold to victory in the 1924 Kentucky classic is handling the engagements of jockey Earl J Knapp The first Jerseybred race of the Garden State Park meeting will be run on Friday May 4 The event is for threeyearolds and upward at six furlongs T Miss Jenepher McLean has entered the thoroughbred owners ranks in partner ¬ ship with Mrs Charles B Lyman The ladies purchased the broodmares Glocca Morra and Sterling Maid from Alfred Roberts RobertsMoreno Moreno Rides First Triple at Meet MeetHenry Henry Moreno was the first jockey to ride three winners on a program at the current meeting when he accomplished the feat on Tuesday Moreno especially adept at rating a mount will for the first time remain in New Jersey throughout the season He rode East gate to victory Tuesday and has been engaged to handle him Saturday in the Delaware Valley Stakes Cecil Knight is another exrider acting as an agent at this meeting He is handling the engagements of veteran Ovie Scurlock Trainer Charles Sanborn has transferred Born Trust Pine Fellow and King Mighty to the farm in Lexington Ky Mrs H Obres Skeptical Kid was shipped yesterday to Laurel Both the handle and attendance for the first three days of this meeting have shown a slight decline over the coinciding days last spring Racetrackers were deeply saddened to hear that Mrs Mose Shapoff has suffered a paralytic stroke Both Mose and son Skip r i ov v oiscs in trpinin her
