2 Jockey Roy Lumm is deserving of a better break than he is getting at this meeting He does not seem to be able to obtain many mounts Lumm is a really good race rider and one of the few jockeys on the turf ever to have ridden the winners of two stakes in a single after ¬ noon He accomplished that feat at Santa Anita February 12 1955 when he piloted Gigantic to victory in the 50000 San An ¬ tonio Handicap and Alidon to success in the 25000 San Luis Rey Handicap Alidon was the first winner to be ridden by Lumm fol ¬ lowing the loss of his apprentice allowance Roy was literally talked into the Gigantic mount Gigantics trainer Frank La Boyne brother of Eddie Arcaros agent was unable to obtain a rider for the horse Lumm was his only chance and he buzzed in the youngsters ear for an hour before Roy consented to ride Gigantic On that single afternoon Lumm just a few months removed from the small tracks in Arizona earned over 5000 more than he had ever seen in his life up to thafe time timeBegan Began With Arizona Quarter Horses HorsesLumm Lumm is 20 years old and was born in Nowata Okla not far from TulsaT He is one of eight children five boys and three girls His father is an oil field worker and one of his older brothers was a quarter horse rider It was the latter who induced Roy to become a jockey The boy rode the first winner of his career at Phoenix January 2 1954 When he was 12 years old he was doing some riding on the unrecognized tracks in his home state and later took to piloting quarter horses While in Phoenix Roy caught the attention of horseman Walter Cluer who took him to Santa Anita early in 1955 The nowsensational Japan ¬ ese jockey George Taniguchi was the Feigning apprentice star at the time and Lumm became his greatest competitor Because of his name many be ¬ lieved that Roy was of Chinese descent In fact one writer made a great todo of the JapaneseChinese rivalry But Roy is all American and as we mentioned above deserves a better break in luck He is affiliated with the Grace Kosiba Stable at Sportsmans Park Eddie Arcaro has been invited to be a guest of the Sportsmans Park management one day during the meeting It might notbe a bad idea also to invite Billy Pearson the jockey who won that 64000 parlay on TV Pearson now is making public appearances around the country and not only will appear but will ride a horse Job and Dell Jessop seemed to be looking daggers at each other as they came to the finish line noses apart the other day And they rode so close to each other that the stewards took a squint at the photographs to see if a foul had been committed The twoyearold LoriEl has the distinction of being one of the few if not the only racer of her age to have won at three tracks this year She scored at Oaklawn Park Keeneland and Sportsmans Park She is by Eternal Reward and cost 700 at the yearling sales Elevenyearold Chicle II onetime stakes winner seems to have reached the bottom of the barrel Ran last for a 2500 claiming price here the other day and was 10 to 1 Jockey Felix Chavez rode the fortieth winner of his career here Tuesday and thereby became a fullfledged jockey as he has been riding over one year He is an 18yearold from Mesitar Colo and is under contract to Dave Engel who saddled the twoyearold Breezy Night Chavez mount It was the initial victory for Breezy Night Trainers Look to Omaha Meeting MeetingFormer Former jockey Herbert Cavalier who was badly injured in a spill at Sportsmans two years ago visited the scene of his accident yesterday morning and was warmly greeted by friends in the jockey colony Cavalier still paralyzed from the waist down was en route from Kessler Institute in New Jersey to his home in New Orleans He made the trip in his own car that was being driven by a friend Trainer Earl H Beezley announced that he would ship the horses in his care to Omaha at the end of the meeting Another trainer heading for Omaha will be Taters Whatley with the runners owned by
