CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN DERBY I Among the fixtures of the Canadian turf the Canadian Derby has from its inauguration held an importance out of proportion to its value and has each 3car been contested by excellent three-year-olds. Martinmas, Advance Guard. Claude, Fort Hunter and Lawrence I. Daley proved their high class on the best tracks of the Fnited States and in competition with the best horses of their years. So far as this year is concerned, it is a fact that the thirteen announced to start tomorrow constitute the best and most attractive Derby Held of 1009, this notwithstanding the greater value of the Brooklyn, Kentucky. California, los Angeles and Latonia Derbys. In 1900 Sidney Lucas ran unplaced to Advance Guard in the Canadian Derby and both horses came to Chicago and ran in the American Derby with such a direct reversal in results that Sidney Lucas won the famous Chicago race and Advance Guard was in his turn unplaced. Another Canadian Derby winner that was brought to Chicago with sanguine hoies of his leing able to follow the example of Sidney Lucas in the American Derby was Port Hunter in 1904. but it was his fortune to run unplaced to the ill-fated Highball. One thing of Interest in this years Canadian Derby is the running of Olambala. This colt is in the Lawrence Realization and if he succeeds here will have a good following in the richer event, even if, he has to meet in it such cracks as Fitz Herbert and Hilarious.
