REDUCED 3ETTING IN AUSTRALIA. In Adelaide last week, says the Australasian of May 15. 5215.570.75 was put through the totalizator in tlirto days. This will be taken by many to mean that there was some heavy betting in Adelaide. It means nothing of the kind. Since the days when the late Mr. Stead backed Le Coup for 00,000 in the Melbourne Cup of 1S70. and Lochiel for large sums in the New Zealand Cup and Newmarket Handicap, New Zoalanders have never been accused of heavv betting, and yet 41.0115 was put through the totalizator at the C. J. C. meeting Tour days last Novemlwr. This quite puts Adelaide iu the shad.. What the anti-gambling people do not understand, or will not admit, is that with the totalizator the same money goes through again and again. Each time it comes out less the percentage which the clubs and the government charge for providing the public with a cheap means of betting. j
