CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE INDEPENDENCE STEEPLECHASE Fourth of July having always fallen to the Coney Island Jockey Club, the Independence Steeplechase was established long ago as an appropriate feature in the clubs contribution to the observance of the patriotic day. In the course of years many of our most noted jumpers have contested In this race and one, Dr. Catlett, managed to win it two years in succession. Hut Dr. Catlett was quite a champion steeplechaser and his performance in 1900, when he won with 109 pounds up, giving Trillion twenty-five pounds and a good beating, was one hardly to be excelled.
