; : f CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE ZEPHYR STAKES : The Zephyr is not a closed stake race this year, being run as an overnight closing affair. But it is one of the first races for two-year-olds established by the Coney Island Jockey Club, antedating the Futurity by two years, and it is almost a certainty that it will be made a closed stake race again, perhaps next year. In its first year of running it .was won by the great Virgil colt. Tremont. and none Iietter lias ever started for it since. He started in thirteen races as a two-year-old and won them all without ever being extended or closely approached. Hanover was of the same age. but Dwycr Bros, hardly cared to race him so certain was it that Tremont would win the stakes, in which they had both of these cracks engaged. However, Hanover won the three races in which they did start him. so when the racing of 1SS0 closed Dwyer Bros, were the owners of two unbeaten two-year-olds, with only Kingston appearing to rank with them. To avoid any trouble from that quarter they quietly bought Kingston. Unluckily, Tremont bowed a tendon and could not be trained when a three-year-old.
