FINAL DAY AT THORNCLIFFE / ♦ Prince of Wales Plate Closing C Feature at Toronto Track. •4 Three-to-Flve Favorite, Clrculet, Quits. Lion Hearted Accounting for Winners Share of Purse. J t a TORONTO, Ont, June 3.— Lion Hearted, t a three-year-old maiden by Bucks Hussar, J which races for Mrs. W. J. Giblin, accounted p for the Prince of Wales Plate at Thorn- , cliffe Park this afternoon, when he beat f the Sewickley Stables Humanist by a neck. t to Lindsay was third, six lengths back, and the t Seagram Stables Circulet, a 3 to 5 favorite, r followed eight lengths further back. There were five starters in the Prince of c Wales riate, Sonnelli being drawn and Lind- t say added. On form Circulet looked to be j A in a soft spot and was made the medium of j heavy backing. The Seagram gelding was e ridden by J. Maiben and he adopted different tactics than he usually does, especially in j races over a distance of ground, when he € sent Circulet to the front in the run to c the first turn. On the back stretch Lion € Hearted joined him and the pair raced head ] and head until well around the far turn, where Circulet quit. McCoy had been rating Humanist under Blight restraint and it looked as if he could , go to the front when ready. When he called ] on Humanist the latter did not respond with , the dash expected of him. At the eighth « post he got on almost even terms with Lion Hearted, but then tired and, despite his j riders efforts, was unable to improve his position during the remainder of the race. Today marked the first running of this , Btakes and it was offered as a feature of , the closing days program of what was one of the best meettings ever given by the Thorncliffe Jockey Club. STIRRING FINISH. A stirring finish came with the running of the first race, when Wander Lou came from behind in the stretch to wear Ignite down and to win going away by a scant length. Ignite, beginning from the outside, went to the front rounding the turn out of the back Btretch and opened up a lead of a length and a half rounding the far turn. Little saved ground with Ignite at the top of the stretch but in the final eighth the latter tired and in the last fifty yards quit. Sunview, the favorite, finished third, beaten off five lengths. The C. L. Whiting stable, which has been in particularly good form in Canada this spring, added another victory to its string when C. F. Clarke sent the Trap Rock gelding Rock Thorn to the post for the Rochester sportsman in the second race. The stables rider, H. Little, had the mount and Rock Thorn won in handsome fashion after overcoming early interference. In the early running Reigh Shot went to the front with a rush and after opening up a lead of a length, was rated under slight restraint. Reigh Shot looked like he might win as they turned into the home stretch, but at this stage he went wide and Little rushed Rock Thorn through and, assuming the lead, drew away until he had an advantage of a length and a half, which he maintained to the finish. When the final test came, Reigh Shot quit and Botanic and Kentucky Colonel both passed him in the last few strides. TWO HORSES FALL. A mishap came with the running of the third race, when Pandy and Marie Blanche II., the two choices, fell, the former directly after the start and Marie Blanche II. after they had gone about a sixteenth. The winner turned up in Plaguer, which beat Clock Golf by a couple of lenghths. Obtain was the first to show and set the pace for an eighth when Plaguer took the lead and retained it for the remainder of the trip. In the stretch Clock Golf moved up with a determined challenge and was even with the pacemaker at the eighth post. This effort told and in the final eighth Clock Golf tired badly. Eight lengths back of Clock Golf finished Dr. Ralston. Oblin, Sinaste and Tillie, noses and heads apart Curdle came from behind in the stretch in the fourth race to win in clever fashion by a length. This Maryland-bred filly was saddled by George Babin, the former jockey who rode Sarazen. The filly ran in the name and colors of his wife and was ridden by G. Seabo. Pondy threatened to make a runaway affair of the race when he went to the front at the start and set the pace until 100 yards from the finish. Curdle, which had begun slowly but gradually improved her position, came to the outside entering the stretch and in the final eighth finished fast, to win going away at the end. Voyage, a factor from the start, finished second a length and a half in front of the tiring Pondy. Cross Word galloped heme to an easy victory in the running of the sixth race, in which she went to the post favorite. In the early running Seabo took her back and permitted Cedar Crest and Hanky Rice to go to the front. Not until making the turn out of the back stretch did he make his move and when he did he took Cross Word to the outside and sho moved up with a rush. In the last quarter she began drawing away from her opponents until she had a lead of ten lengths passing the winning mark. It i was a mighty tight finish for second place, Hanky Rice, Kosciusko and Fire Rock fighting it out for the place and finishing as named, noses apart. As it was, it took the official placing to separate them. Entries to the Forbe6 Godfrey and Racing Form Handicaps to be run at Long Branch on the opening day. closed Monday, June 3. A purse of ,000 is added to the former event and ,500 to the last named. A
