CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 3— B. Watts Atenas displayed dazzling speed throughout the running of the Lakewood Purse, fifth and feature offering at Bainbridge Park this afternoon ,and at no stage of the three-quarters journey did he leave the result in serious doubt. War Instigator was in closest pursuit of the winner all the last half and was best of the others. Paragraph, the favorite, had no excuses, could never get the leaders, but secured the short end of the purse after Two Colors quit in the stretch run. A cold wind swept the course, making topcoats a necessity for comfort, but otherwise the conditions were favorable for the sport. good card was provided and the Ladies Day turnout swelled the attendance considerably. Taking command at once, J. T. Ellis Jack Howe proved to be easily best of the sprinters which measured strength in the sixth dash. Classy and Old Bill were always closest in attendance to the winner and Old Bill proved the gamer during the final test for second honors. Catching the leaders after going half the distance in the first race, Tanger took command and held a safe lead in the stretch. Bavelle Fronk, from a slow beginning, made up much ground and finished a creditable second, after which she pulled up lame. After closing a big gap. Courier was rapidly overhauling the leaders. Another field of twelve paraded for the second race and Buchon led until the stretch was reached, with Knave of Clubs in closest pursuit. An eighth out, Knave of Clubs took the lead and held sway thereafter. Buchon, although tiring, held on long enough to save second from the fast finishing East Side. A keen stretch struggle developed with the running of the third race, in which Florence H. was doing her best all during the last sixteenth to regain a slight advantage over the resolutely finishing Captains Daughter. Temps D Amour was third following a slow beginning. Fair Bill had the most speed at all stages of the fourth race and scored rather handily. Coming with a rush on the outside in the stretch, Signola secured second place by a narrow margin from the favorite, Finnster. «
