Winnipeg racing, which begins at Polo Park Saturday, June 15, to continue for seven days, after which Whittier Park opens its gates for a like number of days, has taken on added importance due to the fact that this will be followed by a meeting of twenty-five days at Butte, Mont Both Winnipeg and Montana racing will be under the direction of R. James Speers, now in Butte, busily engaged superintending the construction of Marcus Daly Park, which when completed will be one of the most modern plants in the west Charles F. Roe, assistant Manager to R. James Speers, accompanied by George W. Schilling, presiding steward at the Butte, Calgary and Winnipeg meetings, arrived in Chicago Saturday morning from Butte, where they conferred with Mr. Speers and inspected the racing plant now nearing completion. They report that keen interest is being manifested in the new enterprise and that the sport of thoroughbred racing in the state of Montana is certain to thrive. Mr. Roes mission in Chicago is to interest horsemen owning the better class horses to ship to Winnipeg and Butte. According to Roe, owners of handicap material will find a fertile field at Winnipeg with its ,200 handicaps provided daily and week-end stakes of ,500 added. No purse is less than 00 for the cheaper horse racing in sprints, while those starting in races over a distance will race for 00 and 00 purses. It is doubtful if any racing on the continent has gone ahead like that in the provinces of Alberta and Manitoba.. Mr. Roe reports that the meeting just completed at Calgary showed a 25 per cent increase in business from both an attendance and mutuel standpoint Winnipeg racing attracts huge throngs.
