Jockey Earl Pool was taken ill during the morning and could not fill his engagement to ride Chelys; Danny Connelly obtained the mount Sewell Combs, whose stable arrived Monday from Churchill Downs, made a trip to Lexington and is expected here Wednesday. John F. Schorr, trainer of the big E. B. McLean stable, was required to have the horses Crossbones and Wave Top at Churchill Downs, due to their being ill. Upon their recovery they will be transferred to this course. Upon receipt of assurance that Toro came out of his Suburban Handicap engagement in good physical trim, Schorr instructed James Mooney, one of his assistants, to keep the colt at Belmont Park and prepare him for the impending Brooklyn Handicap renewal at Aqueduct. Following that race Tor© probably will come to Latonia to start in the Independence Handicap on July 4. A. B. Letellier, whose horses arrived Sunday from Churchill Downs, returned from his home at New Orleans, where he made a short visit last week. He will remain for the entire meeting. Popoff, a two-year-old owned by Henry Simpson, suffered a fracture to one of his forelegs while on the track this morning and had to be destrojed. Thomas Piatt, prominent breeder, was a visitor. He reports that Mr. Carr and himself will have about forty yearlings for the coming Saratoga sales and is satisfied that a bay or brown youngster by Chilhowee — Ballyeuse, by Sweeper, will prove one of the stars of their sale. "He is a corking prospect," Mr. Piatt said. A majority of the yearlings are the get of Upset and Bunting. Trainers licenses were granted W. Z. Martin, J. McShane and W. F. Overton. J. L. Brannon was an arrival from Fair-mount Park and reported that the four horses he has quartered at that course will be shipped to Latonia this week. Brannon holds the contract on the very promising apprentice rider, Kenneth Russell, and at this time is considering several attractive offers for the paper. Cliff Porter has taken up the training of the seven horses that Otto Torrell has had at Latonia for the past month. Bert Scheffel came in from Louisville with nine of the horses of Clyde Van Dusen. Hi« string will be increased by three, which axe due from Lexington Wednesday. J. F. Patterson vanned three horses from Lexington and expects to transfer additional material from the same point next week. The horses Water Gap and Personality, owned by Frank P. Navin, owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball club, are here in charge of C. E. Patterson. Padona, the veteran plater, which had his early racing under the colors of the Kenton Farm Stable, has been returned to that establishment by private purchase from the Valley Lake Stable.
