NUMEROUS SURPRISES- • Nicodemus and Indian Love Cal! Disappointing Favorites. % i Drexel Purse, Feature of Home- wood Program, Witnessed by a Large Crowd. HOMEWOOD, 111.. June 4.— The Drexel j Purse held the feature position on Washing- ton Tarks program today and it brought j to the post half a dozen three-year-olds, some 5 ■with American Derby aspirations. Its run- j ning furnished an upset in the defeat of £ Nieodemus, Judge Hay and Buttered Toast, | a trio of highly-regarded three-year-olds. ] Brown Brutus was the winner. He headed Kicodemus in the last seventy yards to win , drawing away. 1 It was probably a lucky victory for the John Lowe representative, as he escaped interference in the race, whereas most of the j others were sufferers either by interference j or from poor rides. Judge Hay was a suf- ] ferer of both. He was ridden by McDermott and was racing in a forward position . •when McDermott began taking up through , fear that lie would be crowded by Flood Con- , trol. The restraining tactics continued until j ■well Into the stretch, where he attempted to j send his mount up, but at this stage Badger j Face tired unexpectedly and swerved at the same time. He caromed sharply into Judge ] ■Hay, which in turn bothered Nicodemus. The latter recovered quickest and took command, but was passed soon thereafter by , the fast-finishing Brown Brutus. McDermott ■was badly ml tied after his mount met the interference but the colt came fast when urged hard to finish in third place. , Backers of favorites were again sufferers - through the frequent defeats of the choices. ; Indian Love Call, the most pronounced fa- , •vorite of the afternoon, was the greatest disappointment. SURPRISINGLY LARGE CROWD. The improved weather helped to bring out the full strength of racegoers here. It was a surprisingly large crowd for an off day. , They seemed to take much interest in the sport Lakeland, racing for the interest of Roscoe Goose, was victor over five other youngsters in the five-eighths mile first race. He won in the last sixteenth after he had made a strenuous effort to dispose of Foxy Seth. The latter displayed fine speed and gained an added advantage when he came across, sharply and tangled the others. He seemed to have the race won an eighth from the finish, but tired, and this enabled Lakeland to pass him. Tea Cracker was backed extensively but began swerving badly in the stretch under poor riding. The locally owned Gossoon was best of the ordinary ones that started in the second race. He won well in hand from Bar None, ■with Bed Spider following. The winner was at all times in a prominent position and Telton had little difficulty in guiding him away from the others in the final stages. Bar None was another that raced prominently most of the way, but just managed to last long enough for second place. Another stride would have found the fast-finishing Red Spider in second place. He closed a big gap in the last quarter. Winifred. Shift and Owena raced with the leaders in the early stages of the race, but each tired fast when it came to the final drive. A band of fifteen started in the third race over three-quarters and it enabled C. H. Knebelkamps St. Matthews to earn a purse. He showed fine speed from the start and was never seriously in danger. Color Blind, a fast beginner, came with a rush right at the end that landed him slightly in advance of Pomegranate, with Relline, the favorite, in fourth place. St. Matthews and Color Blind were grouped with others in the field. DISPLAYS FIXE SPEED. The outstanding upset of the afternoons racing came in the fourth race, in which Indian Love Call was an overwhelming choice and was decisively beaten by Aleader and Black Beetle, Indian Love Call saving third place. Aleader, with a good display of speed, moved into a long lead soon after the start, with Water Lad closest in pursuit, McDermott taking Indian Love Call into third place. There was no material difference in the running until they straightened out for the stretch drive, where Indian Love Call disposed of Water Lad and began a stern pursuit of the leader. In the last sixteenth. Black Beetle suddenly became active and, coming fast, passed Indian Love Call and just failed to catch Aleader, the latter winning by a nose. Black Beetle would have won in another stride and with a better ride would have won anyway. The Rose Homes Cuddle made it a double for the stable when she won in sparkling fashion in the sixth race, aided by the good ride she received from the old-timer, Yelton. The same rider had given a fine display of horsemanship to bring home Gossoon in the second race. Isostasy was taken back at least six times in the space of three-quarters, on «ach occasion the horse had raced nito a prominent position and loomed up as the possible winner. Cuddles success was achieved at the expense of Doctor Fred, which he beat home by a narrow margin, with the favorite, Spanish Lay. in third place.
