Here and There on the Turf i 1 Before the running of the Kentucky Derby J. J. Coughlins Karl Eitel created a mild sensation when he turned in one of the best mile and a quarter trials of all the candidates at Churchill Downs. Then in the running he cut no figure and was soundly beaten. It was by reason of his poor showing in the Kentucky classic that the son of Poly-melian was given scant consideration in the Fairmount Derby at the Collinsville course Saturday. Karl Eitel romped away in front of his rivals all the way to be home an easy winner. But what was more of a surprise than the victory of Mr. Coughlins colt was the poor showing of Naishapur, winner of the Tijuana Derby and the one which chased Clyde Van Dusen home at Churchill Downs. He was giving Karl Eitel eight pounds, but, taking a line through the Kentucky Derby, that seemed well within his capabilities. It was argued for Naishapur before and after the running of the Kentucky Derby that muddy going was a handicap and the track was muddy. It was muddy again at Fairmount and he was unable to reach a contending position. Of course, there is a wide difference between the going at Churchill Downs and that of. Fairmount Park and that may explain the changed form of Omar Khayyam, which appeared to have such a royal winning chance with Clyde Van Dusen not among the starters. The Rancocas Stable has not had its shate of good fortune this year, though right at the beginning Hildreth took down many purses. Since that time most of the horses in the big string became sick and a detachment of those not afflicted were shipped to Chicago to take part in the racing at Washington Park. There came a reward in the racing of Saturday, when Mowlee carried off the Robert M. Sweitzer Handicap. This is a mile and an eighth dash, considered a bit far for the son of Lucullite, but he showed a return to his best form when he led from end to end of that trying gallop, after giving away weight to every other starter. Another victory of interest and importance. In the racing of Saturday, was when "Walter J. Salmons Black Diamond scored at Thorn-cliffe Park in Toronto. This well bred son of Black Toney and Fair Priscilla, a daughter of Fair Play, finished the mile and a sixteenth in 1 :45%, just one-fifth of a second slower than the track record, to beat such good ones as William T., Sir Harry, Panuco, Light View, and Son o Battle Black Diamond has been named for the Ohio State Derby, to be decided over the Bainbridge course, June 22, and on this showing he takes a new importance among the eligibles for that 12,000 prize. ; t 1 1 • !
