WORLDS MOST FAMOUS RACE Epsom Derby to Be Run Today with Probable Field of Thirty-One Horses. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. LONDON, England, June 4. — The Epsom Derby, the most famous race in the world, will be run at Epsom Downs tomorrow. Thirty-one of Englands best three-year-olds have been selected to battle for the honor and glory awarded the winner of this most celebrated horse race. Five million people have wagered hundreds of thousands of pounds in the gigantic London Stock Exchange and Calcutta sweepstakes and other similar pools throughout the United Kingdom. The Calcutta and Stock Exchange sweeps alone involve about ,000,000 each, the holders of tickets on the winning horse to receive in the neighborhood of 25,000. From city, farm and hamlet the multitude began pouring into the quaint little village of Epsom today, for in England everyone goes to the Derby. It is a national pilgrimage in which all classes participate, from king to costermonger, from landed lord to wandering gypsy. Londoners turned their backs on their shops and offices and joined the early arrivals by train, tram, omnibus, automobile, taxicab, carriage, cart, bicycle and on foot. Viscount Astors Cragadom, Lord Derbys Hunter Moon and Major McCalmonts Mr. Jinks were the ruling choice for the Derby. Hopes of American victory lie in P. D. Q., owned by Gordon Selfridge, the man who successfully introduced American department store merchandising in England, and A. K. Macombers The Carthaginian. P. D. Q. is quoted at 40 to 1 in the future books, while Macombers racer is one of the Epsom outsiders in the speculation. Four times the Epsom Derby has been won by Americans — Pierre Lorillards Iroquois in 1881, the late W. C. Whitneys Volodyovski In 1901, the lale Richard Crokers Orby in 1907. and the late H. B. Duryeas Durbar IL in 1914.
