NAME OF COLT APPROPRIATE Naishapur, Son of Omar Khayyam, Called After Birthplace of Persian Poet. Edward Cebrian, San Francisco citizen, owner of a 45,000-acre : anch called Cuyama, 125 miles from Los Angeles, and who is identified with the turf in Kentucky and Illinois, is now at Washington Park observing the performance of his racers, most of them being two-year-olds, several showing promise. One in particular is Timour, a colt by Infinite — Warwich. It is believed he is a good one. Mr. Cebrian bred Naishapur, which won the Tijuana Derby, finished second to Clyde Van Dusen in the Kentucky Derby and then failed badly in the Fairmount Derby. "An incident difficult to explain," said Mr. Oebrian. "I thought he would win at Fair-mount. I am not so sure he would not have won the Kentucky Derby had the distance been a mile and a half." Mr. Cebrian, instead of studying a form chart, was, during his comment on Naishapur, reading the "Rubaiyat." Its pages had been well thumbed. He answered the question as to the selection of a name for Naishapur, saying: "When I mated Scramble, a French-bred mare, to Omar Khayyam I decided, after the arrival of their colt, that it should be called Naishapur, a rather sonorous name designating the birthplace of the philosopher. It served to contrast the unpretentious village and the great city of Babylon, about which Omar Khayyam wrote. Feeling that the name was appropriate I bestowed it. Ponder upon that which occurred at Fairmount, as described in the "Rubaiyat" : " Whether at Naishapur or Babylon, Whether the cup with sweet or bitter run The wine of life keeps oozing drop by drop. The leaves of life keep falling one by one. "One sees philosophy applied to a thoroughbred as well as to man. Naishapur has shown that he is fast. Why, as a two-year-old he ran a mile in 1 :37%, winning by five lengths. Toss aside his showing at Fair-mount and he has a chance with any horse. He is going in the American Derby, I am sure, and he should redeem himself. John B. Mclvee will send him to the post in fine condition."
