OHIO STATE DERBY ELIGIBLES * Sweep All, Pittsburgher and Spanish Play Probable Starters. » Thirty-Five Crack Three-Year-Olds Named for 2,000 Added Race at Bainbridge Park Saturday. ♦ CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 19.— Nominations for the Ohio State Derby, 2,000 added, closed with a total of thirty-five, the list including some of the best three-year-olds in the country — seven of which started in the Kentucky Derby Saturday. The Bainbridge stake is to be run Saturday* May 23, this being the seventh renewal. Among the prominent nominees and probable starters in Saturdays race are the Dixianas Sweep All, second in the Kentucky Derby; Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play, fourth in the Kentucky event and winner of the Louisiana Derby; Griffin Watkins Insco; W. J. Salmons Ladder* Hamburg Places The Mongol, Shady Brook Farms Pittsburgher and H. C. Hatchs Boys Howdy — all competitors in the Blue Grass race. Other prominent nominees and probable starters include Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lighting Bolt, winner of the Florida Derby, Joliet Stables Blue Law, J. Fred Adams Annimessic and Hold Hard, J. D. Racing secretary Julius Reeder announces he has received word that both Spanish Play and Lightning Bolt were sure starters, and unless something unforeseen happens, the foregoing of the thirty-five nominations will face starter "Buddy" Wingfield Saturday in the Ohio Derby. Sweep All turned out to be the surprise horse in the Kentucky Derby against Twenty Grand and succeeded in defeating Mate* winner of the Preakness. Spanish Play made a great showing in the Louisiana Derby as well as the Kentucky Derby after bowing to Lightning Bolt in the Florida Derby. Pittsburgher succeeded in defeating both in a race before the Derby in Kentucky, which makes the Ohio event appear the most open, race in its history. Boys Howdy, stellar Havana performer, which also made a great pre-Derby showing to beat Spanish Play, Prince DAmour, Insco, Pittsburgher and others, is also given consideration in the Ohio race. There is also a probability of Up starting, according to secretary Reeder, making the Ohio State Derby a competitive affair between champions of the East, West, South and far West.
