AMERICAN DERBY IS NEXT - One Hundred Forty-Eight Eligible for the Rich Race. 4 General Manager C. W. Hay of Washington Park Predicts Field of Fifteen-Twenty Grand an Eligible. ♦ The stars in the Kentucky Derby, having added the fifty-seventh chapter to the glorious history of that great turf spectacle, the Washington Park Jockey Club is setting the stage for the renewal of Chicagos American Derby, Saturday, June 20. There will be the same interest, practically the same cast in a mile and a quarter struggle for an honor that has been won by some of the most illustrious thoroughbreds in American racing. It is the claim of Colonel M. J. Winn, president of the American Turf Association, and judge C. W. Hay, general manager of Washington Park, that the metropolis of the West, including its environs, contributes this countrys banner attendance, and support day after day throughout the season to thoroughbred contests. There has been a united effort on the part of racing organizations to keep step with the sport-loving populace and Chicagos onward sweep to greatness. The result has been the establishment of racing plants that are wonders in magnificence. Thus, when the American Derby date is reached, its presentation will be in a manner eclipsing other annual revivals of the race, an event second only to the Kentucky Derby in sentiment but not in glamor. One hundred forty-eight having qualified in the American Derby by paying 5, it is expected that the field of starters, each calling for the payment of a 00 fee to go to the post, will exceed the number of contestants in the Kentucky Derby. General Manager Hay believes fifteen three-year-olds will answer the bugle call, and that the largest crowd ever assembled on a Chicago course will witness the race. The probable make up of the Derby field, according to judje Hay, will include: Mrs. Payne Whitneys Twenty Grand and Anchors Aweigh, Charles T. Fishers Sweep All, Mrs. James N. Croftons Up, A. C. Bost-wicks Mate, C. V. Whitneys Equipoise, Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lightning Bolt, M. L. Schwartz Clock Tower, Colonel Theodore E. Muellers Pittsburgher, Audley Farms Knights Call, Peter B. Kynes Bonfield, Gal-laher and Combs Oswego and Black Log, Griffin Watkins Insco, Nevada Stock Farms Siskin, C. H. Knebelkamps Spanish Play, H. C. Hatchs Boys Howdy, C. W. Hays Scotlands Glory, Cochran Estates Epithet and Walter J. Salmons Ladder. Washington Parks inaugural, May 25, will be featured by a six furlongs handicap, for three-year-olds and over. This race has ninety-four eligibles. The end of the first week being May 30, Decoration Day, there will be three attractions. One will be a Memorial Handicap, the others are the Debutante Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, the Robert M. Sweitzer Handicap, for three-year-olds and over, each carrying ,000 added value. . « —
