WESTERN CANADIAN RACING Spring Meetings at Victoria and Chinook Park Interesting and Quite Successful. CALGARY, Alta., June 2.— The racing here, which opened at Victoria Park on May 20, is now in its second seven days at Chinook Park. It augurs well for the sport in western Canada that general manager R. James Speers was able to announce to the press that both of the opening days brought out record crowds. The racing under racing secretary Robert S. Shelley has been full of interest and the new official has done yeoman work in submitting to the public a daily program in which races over one mile in length were well featured. Probably the principal items of interest at Victoria Park were the beating of Hey Diddle Diddle by Ella Bank, and the debut of a really smart western-bred two-year-old Lady Marnock, bred and owned by Fred Johnston of Calgary. The riding honors went to Johnny Long-den and W. Ellsworth, who tied for first place, but Longden on Saturday booted home another three firsts at Chinook, so that he is at present well clear of his rival. The big feature of the spring season will undoubtedly be the Alberta Derby Stakes of ,000 added at one mile. This is for three-year-olds foaled in western Canada, and nominations were made before June, 1928. Subscriptions followed in the Januarys of 1929, 1930, 1931, with an extra 5 for starters. There were forty-four left in on March 7 of this year. The get of twelve western Canadian sires are still in, and there is the most intense interest evident in the ranks of the breeders of bloodstock in Alberta, Manitoba and British Columbia*
