May Visitor After Absence of Twenty-Seven Years. » Brings Epithet to Homewood Course for Warm Stable — Amazed at Magnificence of Washington Park. ♦ HOMEWOOD, 111., June 2.— J. W. "Bub" May, who has a nation-wide reputation as a trainer and all-around colorful figure on the metropolitan turf, comes back to Chicago after twenty-seven years to participate in the Washington Park campaign. Mays last appearance in this city was in 1904 when he saddled the American Derby winner, Highball, ridden by Grover Cleveland Fuller. "Not since that day," said May, "have I been in Chicago. When I recall old Washington Park, and contrast it with the pres-sent magnificent plant, I feel as if I had been asleep respecting the advancement of racing in this wonderful city. "New York might find Washington Park a model as compared to some of its courses. I except Belmont Park, but no others. It combines appearance, class and accessibility. While I am discussing tracks. Lincoln Fields is as great. "I brought a Derby winner on my last visit. I brought one this time, so far as appearances are concerned in Epithet. In turning this Warm Stable crack over to Jack Middleton, who will train him, I informed him that this son of Epinard— Fairy Wand had turned in a half mile in :50 the last time he was breezed. He looks tip-top and acts as if he is ready to go on with his preparation for the American Derby, which is three weeks away." Trainer Middleton admitted that Epithet is grand looking, carrying no fat. If possible, he said, the horse will be started in the Derby. Epithet may be given a race or two prior to the American Derby, but trainer Middle-ton did not say so. Mays horses include Le Compre, Black Belt, Please and Charleigh. The latter is an American Derby eligible. R. H. Williams, who entered Charleigh in the Derby, is dead. May, who trained for him, bought Black Belt, Please and Charleigh from the estate. Le Compre will be raced in the name of Max Hirsch. Charleigh is a slashing bay colt by Master Charlie, from Patsy Lee, by Delhi, a son of Ben Brush.
