STAKE WINNING JOCKEYS j OF LAST YEAR j u Several jockeys who won stake money in. amounts ranging between four and five thousand dollars during 1931 earned such financial standings by winning some of the small stakes offered at Tanforan. It happened that these stakes were pretty well divided. . V. Moore won the most valuable in this class when he rode Sharp Thoughts in the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce Claiming K Handicap, an event for all ages, worth ,950. Sharp, Thoughts, a two-year-old, owned by Alexander Pantages, defeated the older Hot Shot, Sundot, My Dandy, Listo, Satin Spar and a few others. G. Smith won the A. B. Spreckels Memorial Handicap, another Tanforan race for all ages. This was worth ,450. Peggy J. was the winner on a heavy track over Bahamas, My Dandy, Jim Dandy and others. G. De Peso had the mount on Morpheus, winner of the Derby Candidates Handicap, which had a value of ,345. D. Porter won ,275 in a lump by riding A. A. Baronis Wirt G. Bowman in the California Claiming Handicap. In the beaten field were Brown Wisdom, Listo and Seguro. Some other jockeys whose stake successes passed ,000 but did not reach ,000 were J. H. Burke, A. Pendergrass, A. Yerrat and G. Fields. Burke rode Polonaise when the W. R. Coe filly defeated Lucky Tom and Espinaca, a pair of Winter Derby candidates, in the Albany Handicap. This was worth ,700. Pendergrass won the Thistle Down Handicap with Uncommon Gold, taking down A ,400. Yerrat was on Doctor Happy when that long shot outran Proteus and a big field in the Louisiana Juvenile Stakes, wQrth ,225. The veteran Fields won his stake at Empire City, riding Microphone ahead of Lucky Tom and Fall Apple, to win ,175. Winners of such amounts in stake money during 1931 were: H. CALLAHAN.
