- i RUNNING WATER BY A HEAD Defeats My Blaze in Best Race on Coney Island Program. After Dark and Pantaloons Show Way to the Other Sprinters in Fourth Deferred Wins From Agatha. CINCINNATI, Ohio, Aug. 14. Running Water, the five-year-old son of Cherokee Martre, which races for the Serenata Farm Stable of E. B. McAtee, was a driving winner of the six furlongs fourth race, which was one of the principal races at Coney Island here this afternoon. His margin at the end was a head over M. J. Conleys My Blaze, which beat After Dark a nose for the second award. Eight contested here and Pantaloons showed the way to Dollar Princess, Major Accident, Fair Wanda and Essential. Ideal conditions prevailed and the crowd equalled that of other Monday gatherings. Although choices started off on the right foot in th opening events, they failed to keep pace and when Running Water got up after ducking to the inside in the final sixteenth it marked the third straight mild surprise. Dusty Dawn carried the colors of L. J. Hickman to a nose triumph in the five and one-half furlongs Mansfield Purse that served as the fifth number. I Prevail was second, with Tyrant third. There was a long delay at the start of the dash, during which Lady Macaw and Long Bit unseated their riders and the bridle on I Prevail was broken. Once under way, Dusty Dawn took command and after establishing a good lead he held on determinedly to withstand I Prevail, which, after reaching the winner midway of the stretch, was unable to head him. Tendril, which was installed an even money choice, stopped badly after showing speed for three-eighths. Doilar Princess was the one that had the most early speed in the fourth. Running Watr was in close quarters in the first three-eighths and after D. Broic had elected to go wide entering the stretch, Running Water tool: things in his own hands and bore in after reaching the final sixteenth. This probably turned defeat into victory, as Running Water got up by the closest of margins and his triumph was one of the closest of the afternoon. After being outrun for a half mile, Pantaloons came strong to wear down Dollar Princess. Close up throughout, My Blaze reached the lead midway of the stretch, but tired slightly. Essential was cased up after his saddle slipped. Second went to Spring Flight with Amillian third. A surprise came with the running of the second race, another maiden affair, and for two-year-old fillies, when W. F. Knebel-kamps Ruth Landolt was a driving winner. Garb, which had the most support, was second, with Lou Boot third. The winner, causing the long delay, was not prepared at the start, but overcame this when she rushed into the lead in the first forty yards and held Garb safe in the final drive. After reaching second place in the stretch, Lou Boot tired, but was best of Illusory, which was the third choice. Tit Tat, which was next in regard to Garb, outbroke her opponents but dropped back fast and failed to offer any serious threat. The colors of Albert Johnson, former jockey, were, carried to victory over eleven others in the thirdra.ee, which was marred when Fair Breeze stumbled on the first turn and unseated jockey J. Lane.
