Ky May 1 Dartle named for the Kentucky Derby but not pointed for the race and a son of Dodge which finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby of 1916 Peace Chance and Sir Thomas furnished some of the May Day fireworks for another large crowd at Churchill Downs today Dartle was not fully extended to defeat four other of the better grade threeyearolds in the Crestwood Purse This was a sprint of six furlongs and although overshadowed by the Preparation Purse also for threeyearolds and engaging several certain to face the barrier in Saturdays sixtieth renewal of the Derby was of great interest to patrons Peace Chance accounted for the Prepara ¬ tion Purse with Blue Again second Plight third unplacedDartle and Sir Thomas unplaced Dartle owned by Fredrick A Burton Chi cago sportsman whose horses race under the Everglade Stable banner was not fully ex ¬ tended to win from such other fast ones as J W Parrishs New Deal J E Wideners Sickle Pear C C Van Meters Mr James and the Young Brothers Penncote in this his first competitive effort of the year He yearHe probably will have his first important engagement in the 25000 American Derby to be renewed at Washington Park ParkJ J Cassard astride the Everglade coj made a quick escape from a trap between the leading Sickle Pear ridden by Wayne Wright and the rail on the far turn and Cassards quick decision probably saved his mount considerable trouble On the turn the winner was under restraint and when permitted in the stretch easily wore down Sickle Pear With the lead achieved he came on weli out of danger from New Deal which advanced to second in the final fur ¬ long Mr James second choice to the victor gave a rather even performance to finish fourth little more than four lengths back while Penncote never was much of a threat threatThe The winners time of 111 was the fastest of the meeting meetingPEACE PEACE CHANCES FAST MILE MILEWith With a brilliant performance and making a new track record of l354s for the mile J E Wideners Peace Chance trained by Peter Coyne accounted for the Preparation Purse Wayne Wright riding his second winner brought the son of Chance Shot and Peace to the finish four lengths before Ed ¬ ward R Bradleys Blue Again which ran a game race to outstay W Sachsenmaiers Texas Derby winner Plight by a half length Quasimodo which had the most early speed and in bearing out badly on the far turn forced Blue Again to go with him was fourth with Sir Thomas A B Gordons maiden which at one time was favorite for the Derby far back in the field of twelve twelveTo To be exact Sir Thomas beat just two horses Fogarty and Prince Pompey and Continued on thirtieth page DARTLEPEACE CHANCE Continued from first page the latter was away too poorly to have any ¬ thing of a chance Despite severe urging at the hands of A Pascuma from the time the barrier went up until the finish Sir Thomas flatly refused to extend himself He fol ¬ lowed almost twenty lengths back at the finish and was worked out an additional quarter in the dull time of 208 208Hathy Hathy Sam Looks Master Charlie filly which went well in her first and only chance under colors came back an easy winner of the Sub Debs Purse an event for juvenile fillies first on the program She led through ¬ out and at the end of the four and onehalf furlongs held a sixlength margin over Ice ¬ berg Third fell to Lady Excellent with Monks Shawl next in the field of ten The second choice Mary T was never a factor The winner favorite was ridden by H L Fischer FischerOld Old Sis Agnes making her second appear ¬ ance of the meeting in three days disap ¬ pointed a big following when she was com pletely subdued by Strait Jacket Genteel Lady and Through Omond over six and one half furlongs in the second race Lacking her customary late speed Sis Agnes never gave her backers any cause for elation the three leaders having the race to themselves from start to finish finishIn In the stretch Strait Jacket piloted by Lester Balaski in W Sachsenmaiers colors raced from behind Through Omond and Gen ¬ teel Lady to win by half a length as Genteel Lady outstayed Through Omond by a length and onehalf for second Back Log took fourth money moneyChoices Choices accounted for all the honors in the third race also for older platers decided over six and onehalf furlongs Smear now in his sixth year but of the useful sort was the winner with Two Tricks second and Otherwise best of the others in the field of eleven for minor honors The winner and runnerup shared favoritism at 3 to 1 with Otherwise third choice choiceTwo Two Tricks and Otherwise raced like a team for more than four and a half fur ¬ longs Wayne Wright bringing the winner up in a mild drive to win by slightly more than a length lengthRoyal Royal Gold strong second choice to Baby Stare easily defeated the favorite along with six other threeyearolds over the mile distance in the fourth race The victor easily wrested the lead from Baby Stare when H Schutte called upon him in the stretch and after reaching the front drove on to win by four lengths as Baby Stare on which Wright tried for his second vic ¬ tory withstood the late rush of Hit and Run long enough to take second money
