WINOOKA TO BE AT HOMEWOOD Australian Star to Start in Wash ¬ ington Park Handicap Robert M Sweitzer Handicap and Francis FrancisS S Peabody Memorial Also on Stake StakeSchedule Schedule of Poisons Charge Winooka Australian thoroughbred that raced with a fair measure of success in Maryland last autumn will make his bow before the turf fans of Chicago and vicinity in the 2500 added Washington Park Handicap feature offering of the opening day of the coming meeting at the Homewood track May 24 That event will serve as a leader for his next stake en ¬ gagement at the same track the Robert M Sweitzer Handicap its distance being three quarters of a mile while the other fixture calls for a contest over the route of one and oneeighth miles Then to cap the climax the Antipodean crack will be sent after the Francis S Peabody Memorial Handicap which will be decided along about the last part of the season Its distance is one and onequarter miles milesEach Each of these stakes has an added value of 2500 and many turfmen who have seen the Australian horse work this spring aver that it is not a whole lot unlikely for him to capture the trio trioTrainer Trainer Joe Patterson wintered Winooka at the Audley Farm owned by B B Jones his employer at Berryville Va The son of Wingbag apparently put in a fine winter as soon after his arrival at Louisville with the Audley band he was called upon for speed trials and acquitted himself handsomely He recently clipped off threeeighths of a mile in 35 and his rider was swinging oh him from one end to the other otherTrainer Trainer Mike Poison regular trainer of Winooka has returned to America from his native soil where he spent the cold months and he will saddle him in his stake engage ¬ ments It is more than likely that the ef ¬ forts of Poisons charge will be confined chiefly to stakes and he will be kept busy throughout the summer summerHis His entry for the three Washington Park fixtures was among the first received by the Homewood management managementLAST LAST YEARS CAMPAIGN CAMPAIGNLast Last year Winooka began his campaign at Tanforan winning the International Cham ¬ pionship worth 10000 there He later moved on to Longacres where he won a stake and added 5000 to his purse earn ¬ ings His most important stake achieve ¬ ment however was attained at Pimlico where he triumphed in the Baltimore Handi ¬ cap This race had a monetary worth of only 2250 net but he defeated better horses in effortsAll it than in his western efforts All told the Australian representative started seven times in America and won four He finished third once bringing his total purse earnings to 20300 20300Eastern Eastern horsemen ventured the opinion last autumn that Winooka would have made a much better showing at Baltimore had he enjoyed the services of an American jockey His pilot also an Australian took no chances on getting into close quarters and as a result the horse raced unnecessarily wide upon several occasions When a switch was made to an American rider the benefit was noticeable at once onceWhen When he came here Winooka was a bit slow in becoming acclimated but now he is as much at home on an American track as any of our native thoroughbreds His career this season will be watched with in ¬ tense interest as good stake horses are none too plentiful at the present time timeAUDLEY AUDLEY FARMS BIG STABLE STABLEWhen When Winooka comes to Washington Park the entire Audley Farm outfit will also head this way Trainer Patterson has his usual big band numbering about thirty horses eligible and ready to race in all sorts of races and thus far he has had excellent luck with his training operations at Louisville LouisvilleEach Each year finds the Audley establishment well equipped with home bred twoyearolds and they invariably make their presence felt wherever they go Owner Jones is more interested in the breeding end of the sport than any other part of it and he gets the thrill of his life out of winning with a colt filly or gelding bred by himself himselfFew Few stables make more stake entries than the Audley Farm and it has won many of the noted stakes of this country with the exception of the big threeyearold affairs at least once Jones has been striving for years to develop a Kentucky Derby winner but to no avail He will continue trying however and feels confident that he will yet meet with results resultsEntries Entries for all seven stakes to be run at the Washington Park meeting from May 24 to June 23 inclusive close on May 1 The manner in which nominations are coming in at present indicates that the list will rank well up with previous years This is espe ¬ cially true of the 25000 added American Derby which is down for decision June 9
