SLAPDASH SHOWS FINE SPEED1 Gallops Fastest ThreeQuarters of Present Jamaica Meeting Emanuel Colorbearer Timed in 111 Miss Merriment Accounts for Second Place in Thrilling Race JAMAICA N Y May 1 Slapdash the Wheatley Stables running daughter of Stimulus and Tetrarchy ran the fastest six furlongs of the Jamaica meeting today when she was the winner of the Whimsical Purse from Victor Emanuels Miss Merriment a recent winner Far back of the pace was C V Whitneys Elf Lock and the only other starter was the Greentree Stables Dabchick DabchickSlapdash Slapdash raced in 111 just a fraction slower than the track record The best time this year was when Sgt Byrne was winner of the Paumonok Handicap in 111 111While While some of the fields were small for todays racing the contests were excellent and close finishes were the order Bright sunshine helped in the enjoyment of a big crowd that was out for the sport sportThe The Whimsical Purse brought Slapdash back to her real form Her only other start of the season was in the Paumonok Handi ¬ cap in which she was soundly beaten but she has now found her racing stride and the performance was one to suggest she will take her place among the best of the fillies filliesFrom From a good start Coucci rushed Dab chick away to lead the small band through the back stretch She was closely followed by Miss Merriment and Gilbert had Slap ¬ dash after the pair Near the turn from the back stretch and after Miss Merriment had caught the Greentree filly to take com ¬ mand Slapdash appeared to run up on the heels of Dabchick and Gilbert took her back slightly slightlyRacing Racing outside with the filly Gilbert soon had Dabchick headed but he made no se ¬ rious effort to catch Miss Merriment until reaching the short stretch By that time Dabchick was through and Miss Merriment was doing her best to hold the command Stride by stride Slapdash drew on the Emanuel filly until she was alongside then she was on by and her winning margin was a length and a half halfBob Bob Smith sent another winner to the post for Mrs Isabella Dodge Sloane in the opening race This was a five furlongs test for plater fillies and Greenstone with the veteran Mack Garner in the saddle scored over the Fitzsimmons pair Migrate which raced for H C Phipps and Distracting that bore the Wheatley Stable silks silksWith With little delay at the post the field got away to a good start and Coucci took com ¬ mand at once with Migrate Herendeth was in second place but she was next to the rail and in the first furlong when she was un ¬ able to go to the front she was soon crowd ¬ ed back badly to drop out of contention Greenstone was in the first flight and Gar ¬ ner soon had her pressing Migrate closely closelyIn In the stretch Garner handled Greenstone nicely and in a vigorous ride had her win ¬ ner by a length Migrate had beaten her stablemate by a length and a half and Merry Bud was fourth Herendeth while gaining ground on the outside swerved in sharply to lose any chance she may have had to share in the purse division
