AURORA ENTERTAINS BIG CROWD ON OPENING DAY Fifteen Thousand Witness Inaugural Inauguralof of Illinois Racing Season of 1934 Zekiel Lowers ThreeQuarters Mile Record to Win Feature Handicap Seremba Colors in Double DoubleVictory Victory With Zekiel and Anne L AURORA III May 1 With the same enthusiasm which has characterized the open ¬ ings of spring meetings of previous years Chicagoans truly upheld their standard of interest in thoroughbred racing when they turned out en masse to witness the running of the opening days program at Exposition Park which ushered in the racing season of 1934 Fully 15000 ardent turf fans crowded the spacious Aurora plant and long before post time for the first race the large grandstand was filled to capacity the terraces and lawn were also thickly populated Despite the vast throng that was on hand there was little inconvenience for the patrons as gen ¬ eral manager Robert S Eddy had made pro ¬ visions to handle the situation and his large corps of traffic directors worked with pre ¬ cision cisionThe The program comprised of seven races was featured by the Inaugural Handicap for threeyearolds and over which had 1200 attached and tested the starters over the threequarters course Included among those under colors were several of the best sprinters on the grounds and of the sixteen named overnight nine went postward postwardIdeal Ideal weather conditions prevailed and the track was at its best which was attested to by the fast time made in all the races Zekiel consistent son of Zev which has proved one of the best sprinters among the winter performers added further to his laurels when he lowered the track record and won the Inaugural Handicap running the threequarters in 111 He carried the green and white colors of Frankie Seremba into first place one length in front of Mrs Jess Burks Flying Cadet and third went to the lightly regarded Captain Joy which performed under the colors of B Hernandez This was the second winner for the Seremba establishment and also for jockey Joe Guerra who piloted Anne L to victory in the first race raceIncluded Included among the victims of the speed Continued on thirtieth page AURORA ENTERTAINS BIG CROWD ON OPENING DAY DAYContinued Continued from first page of the winner were Supreme Sweet Minton Fair Image Miss Melody and Our Justice JusticeThere There was a slight delay at the post but starter Wingfield got the field off in almost perfect alignment and before going a six ¬ teenth Supreme Sweet took a clear lead Zekiel raced into contention and was in close attendance under mild restraint while Miss Melody was showing the way to the others Flying Cadet moved up fast after a quarter and displaced Miss Melody while Supreme Sweet and Zekiel were well in ad yance in the lead positions As they turned for home Supreme Sweet began to shorten her stride and readily gave way to the rush of Zekiel which was sent up on the outside into the lead The winner increased his margin to some extent but in the final stages it was lessened somewhat as Flying Cadet came with a rush and while he made up some ground the winner had enough left to hold him safe safeMinton Minton favorite for the race failed dis ¬ mally in his performance when he raced far back from the start finishing sixth in the field of nine nineThe The sale of programs before the horses were off in the first race was just a few short of 8000 Figured on the usual race track basis this sale indicated a crowd of about 15000 15000Anne Anne L good daughter of Repulse and Unexpected opened the local season with a well earned victory when under a powerful ride by jockey Joe Guerra she outlasted the rank outsider Justice B to gain a head decision while Papyrograph was up to gar ¬ ner third money from Whizz James JamesLa La Salle was favorite but at no time dur ¬ ing the running did he show enough speed to cope with his successful rivals and raced far LuggageAnother back as did Lugen Luggage Another upset occurred with the running of the second race when Well Heeled led home the favored Infinity Fair Billows and eight others that went postward for the threequarters test The winner in com ¬ mand from the start shook off Infinity after the first quarter and increased his advan ¬ tage when the latter bore out badly in the stretch but was subjected to strong pressure to hold the race safe when Infinity came fast in the final stages Fair Billows which finished third might have been a more formidable factor and her performance was a good one considering the going over she got on the back stretch stretchAnother Another favorite went down this time by the slight margin of a head when Sam Corbets Valley led C E Davisons Hot Shot to the line of finish and third went to Moral Miss an outsider under the colors of J C Ellis EllisThe The winner rushed into the lead early maintained a short advantage over Hot Shot as they sped over the five and one half furlongs course in 106 The victress unable to gain a decisive margin through ¬ out the running gave a rather game per ¬ formance when she stood a long drive game ¬ ly to get the verdict Toltec and Dr Louis Hamman which were among the choices not only failed to be strong factors but never reached a contending position
