SOMEBODY MAKES GOOD Justifies Confident Backing of Many ManyAdmirers Admirers at Pimlico Towson Purse Develops Into Heavy HeavyBetting Betting Affair With Two Others OthersAlso Also Well Backed BALTIMORE Md May 1 Somebody son of Chance Shot and Phalara runnerup in the McLennan Memorial at Hialeah Park on March 10 which Blessed Event won in 148 equalling the fastest time ever made anywhere in a race of one mile and a fur ¬ long won the feature race at Pimlico this afternoon before 8000 racing enthusiasts The day was bright but unseasonably cool The race in question was called the Towson Purse It was a 1000 condition affair of one mile and seventy yards in which the other contestants were Round Table Snappy Story Moon Glory Believer Law Suit and Earnings the last named a half brother of Twenty Grand All carried 110 pounds Erratic at Hialeah and not overly good at Houston in March Some ¬ body which bore the silks of the Maemere Farm and was saddled by George Phillips who had just missed with his youngster First Roundup in the second race was well backed nevertheless It was a good betting affair all around Believer and the J W Y Martin pair Moon Glory and Law Suit be ¬ ing almost as strongly backed as the winner winnerTWO TWO BAD ACTORS ACTORSA A fair start was effected after twitches had been applied to the muzzles of Believer and Snappy Story which behaved outrage ¬ ously and Believer got away in the lead He was closely followed by Moon Glory and Round Table and Moon Glory assumed com ¬ mand as the field swung into the back stretch Round Table took the lead on the far turn and he headed down the home stretch with what looked like a winning margin But in the last sixteenth Some ¬ body in the middle of the track challenged briskly to win by a head with Snappy Story a head behind Round Table in third place The finish was so close the crowd booed the placing of the judges Somebody ran the distance in 145 145After After Rustic Cuba Nourrice and Holland with Meloy driving hard immediately behind them had set the pace down the back stretch and around the far turn in the open ¬ ing race Apprehensive passed them in the stretch and came on to be an easy winner There was four lengths of daylight between him and Nourrice and an equal margin be ¬ tween Nourrice and Rustic Cuba Rustic Cuba had a nose on Meloy The latter sec ¬ ond betting choice to Drombo did not seem to be able to get going He was under hard urging from the start which was quick and good Drombo was even more sluggish Twodollar mutuel tickets were cashed upon the winner which had not started since the fag end of the Tropical Park meeting at 1560 The place price on Nourrice was even more generous It was nearly 18 to 1 1STIRRING STIRRING FINISH FINISHMrs Mrs Katherine Elkins Hitts homebred twoyearold Barcarolle a bay son of Ed Crump and Nocturne which had shown im ¬ provement of form in the second of two efforts at Havre de Grace won the four and a half furlongs claiming race that had sec ¬ ond place on the card after a stirring finish with First Roundup The latter a Texas bred son of Porte Drapeau owned by George Phillips and a winner first out at Houston in March was pressing Barcarolle hard as the two finished after overcoming a lead of a length and a little more Barcarolle had maintained the lead from the start startSome Some of the crowd thought the Texan horse had gotten up and expressed mild dis ¬ approval of the decision of the judges Not improbably the slow breaking Blackbirder a son of Bostonian and Kenya of the sta ¬ ble of Mrs Helen Hay Whitney would have won at five furlongs The Bostonian colt apparently hopelessly distanced in the back stretch made up plenty of ground in the far turn and finished fast in the stretch Barcarolle and First Roundup had only a length on him and he finished about half a length in front of Color Bearer
