EQUIPOISE WINS DIXIE Pimlico Crowd Disappointed When Chase Me Is Withdrawn Long Expected Meeting Between BetweenStars Stars Deferred Whitney Crack CrackAdds Adds 4150 to His Earnings BALTIMORE Mdf May 5 A sorely dis ¬ appointed crowd of 25000 gathered from Marylands widespread and populous racing area saw Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitneys Equipoise win the eleventh Dixie Handicap over a fast track and under a broiling sun this afternoon It was a disappointed crowd because Chase Me Mrs John Bosley Jrs hero of last falls racing in Maryland which scored his seventh straight victory here last Wednesday when he defeated Chatmoss Larranaga and Teralice in a dash of one mile and seventy yards sidestepped a meet ¬ ing with Equipoise under a 120 to 130 pounds weight arrangement arrangementSurprise Surprise was expressed yesterday when Mrs Bosley nominated her sterling per ¬ former for a dash of one mile and three sixteenths that had an added money value of only 5000 in view of the circumstance that promoters of racing in other parts of the country had been reported as being willing to put up 25000 or more for a match race between Chase Me and the Whitney ace aceWhen When Chase Mes name appeared in the late afternoon papers as a Dixie nomination it was taken for granted that he would run To this circumstance possibly as many as 7000 of the crowd could be attributed There was nothing outside of the prospect of the meeting between Americas handicap cham ¬ pion of three years standing and the most formidable challenger of today on the pro ¬ gram to bring out more than an average Saturday attendance attendanceNO NO EXPLANATION OFFERED OFFEREDNo No explanation that satisfied could be obtained after the posting of Chase Mes program numeral 5 on the scratch board at the back of the stewards kiosk Mrs Bos ¬ ley the clerk of the course said handed in the scratch at 305 oclock without comment The officers of the Maryland Jockey Club professing extreme vexation at her act were unable to advance any illuminating informa ¬ tion If Mrs Bosley told any of them any ¬ thing they did not release her statement statementHoliday Holiday racing crowds as a general thing do not pay much attention to the scratch board So it was not generally known that Chase Me was not to run until the jockey board was hoisted immediately after the finish of the fourth race Then when it was noted that the space reserved for the name Continued on thirtythird page EQUIPOISE WINS DIXIE Continued from first page of his rider was vacant there twas booing and catcalling catcallingThe The race was a romp for Equipoise on which the odds were prohibitively short He loafed behind Flaming Mamie for nearly mile with Sonny Workman Who had al ¬ ready ridden one winner the twoyearold E Evangelist tugging at his reins Just be ¬ ft fore he swung around the final turn Work m man let him Tiave his head and in three or fc fpur strides he was two or three lengths in ft front Chatmoss passed the tiring Flaming Mamie about a furlong out and took second jJ place easily Jovius which had come down froth New York in the expectation of muddy g going was a distant last The real thrill of the race was furnished by the performance of Flaming Mamie If Equipoise had not been in tp run her dizzy she L j would have given the improved Chat moss something of an argument for first money If she ever ran better nobody re ¬ members it Victory today added 4150 to the swelling total of Equipoises earnings which are now above 330000 His time was slow because h he did not have to extend himself He has added his name to a winners roster that already boasted the names of Sarazeri Cha colet Mars Mike Hall Diavolo Sandy Ford p Paul Buriyan Gallant Knight and Stepen fetchit fetchitMrs Mrs Frank Goulds Daniel Soot a good jumper and consistent winner last season p proved good enough at the first asking to defeat the better seasoned Muskogee Al pheus and Quick March in the 1000 Steeplechase c Handicap that headed the pro gram Jj He defeated Spar Dunwell and Aries too and paid better than 3 to 1 Quick j March and Alpheus being preferred over j him After following Aries more than a turn of the field he took command at the water jump the second time and jumping well cantered home by as big a margin as r Thorndyke wished Muskogee a winner earlier in the week held secpndplace safe Ball did not seem to know what to do with Mrs Ambrose Clarks gelding Alpheus He had againThe him in tight places time and again The favorite Mr Hyde now the property of Arthur Hullcoat lost the claimer of six furlongs that followed the steeplechase be ¬ cause the ordinarily alert Merritt failed to 1 get him tiway from the post with the others This may not have been altogether Merritts fault Along with Marge Toytime and Wilrob he did some cutting up at the start J Nevertheless he was a bad last when the nine left the stalls That he was best he J demonstrated by passing everything but Toytime which task involved overcoming a L distancehandicap of sixty or seventy yards and going farther than any of the contend ers Toytime which took the lead when Wilrob tired about a furlong put just beat him He was going away from Pass and I Wilrob as he and Toytime finished lapped Toytime paid generously a shade better than 412 to 1 Mrs Oliver Iselins smooth going St James colt Evangelist won his second J straight at Pimlico and third out of four J starts at Havre de Grace and Pimlico when he cantered home under Wprkman in the J third a condition race over four and a half furlongs He had eleven opponents and was 5 an oddson choice The others winning betting support were s Canterboy Night Serge Whoa Back and J Braving Danger It was a twohorse affair from the beginning Canterboyj under a little known lad called Rich showed the s way down the back stretch and around the far turn where Workman turned Evangelist t looser to do his stuff Workman was sit ting up as the colt finished daylight sep arating him from Ganterboy Neither Ten Law nor Chewsie which brought up third j and fourth appeared to belong with the first two although Ten Law did not run a bad race under the light and none too skilful I Lowry Vishnu won his first race in five Mary land attempts when he defeated eleven sprinting platers in a dash of six furlongs in which he and the others were entered to 0 be sold for 1500 He won with plenty of margin He was tiring fast however and j young Litzenberger was showing nervous ness by rapping him now and then with the g whip At six furlongs and a half very likely T both Axentea and Revonah which finished second and third would have defeated him j The price was 7 to 5 and it was none too 0 good considering his failures at Bowie and d Havre de Grace Gallic bore out on the far turn and down n the home stretch but he proved good enough h nevertheless to bring Litzenberger home on n his third winner when he scored over eight it in the sixth The distance was one mile and j a sixteenth Gallic was hot favorite There e was a good price on Bun D which pressed d the Galetian gelding hard
