ZEKIEL LOWERS RECORD Clips Fifth of Second Off Own Mark Markof of Opening Day Gallops Three Quarters at Aurora in 111 Defier Also Wins for forFrank Frank Seremba AURORA 111 May 5 Despite the attrac ¬ tion of the Kentucky Derby there was ap ¬ proximately 12000 racing fans that wended their way from Chicago and many adjacent towns to witness the running of Saturdays program which was featured by the Chicago Tribune Handicap a sixfurlong sprint which engaged half a dozen of the tbp notchers on the grounds Zekiel speedy son of Zev and Royalite which races for Frankie Seremba scored in impressive fash ¬ ion and for the second time within a week established a new track record when he clipped a fifth off the mark which he made opening day when he won the Inaugural Handicap over the same course courseNavanod Navanod a rank outsider followed the winner to the line of finish two lengths back and a head in advance of Flying Cadet which finished in third place and led home Our Justice Minton and Miss Melody which finished in the named order orderIn In this engagement Zekiel picked up a sixpound penalty but that did not make any difference to the son of Zev which is at the peak of his form at present and to prove his race the opening day was no fluke he did everything but make a show of his rivals in todays contest contestNEVER NEVER IN DANGER DANGERThe The start was a good one and it was Navanod which showed out of the bunch but Zekiel raced past him with ease arid into a slight lead As they made the turn the Seremba representative opened up a big margin of six lengths which he maintained to the final eighth where he showed signs of the strain While he gave ground he was never in danger of defeat and easily held Navanod safe when the latter came fast in the final stages Flying Cadet made an appreciable gain in the final quarter but was never a serious threat while Minton seems to be way off form at present and raced among the laggards throughout Threatening weather prevailed prior to the running of the first race but the sky cleared after the first race and the sport was conducted under bright sunshine for the remainder of the day The fast track which prevailed enabled the winners to make good time Among the notables to witnesses the feature offering from the stewards stand was Leo Spitz a member of the rac ¬ ing commission commissionAbout About the only way that Altmark fav ¬ orite for the fourth race could have been beaten was to be left at the post This happened when the B Hernandez horse was standing flatfooted when the start came and only galloped after his opponents for the entire six furlongs The winner turned up in Frankie Serembas Defier which did not have much to worry about during his gallop for his opponents could never get close enough to him during the race to make it look like a horse race The vet ¬ eran Martie Flynn which finished sec ¬ ond might have upset calculations but for being impeded by the winner soon after the start and despite his being forced off his stride was good enough to come on nnd fur ¬ nish the strongest contention for the winner1 in the finalsstages but was lacking two and one half lengths of overhauling him when they finished Well Heeled which won iti a canter last out could not raise a respect1 able gallop today and with Altmark left it made it much easier for the winner to makev good for his admirers admirersANNIE ANNIE N GRADUATES GRADUATESAfter After several unsuccessful attempts Annie N which races for Mrs J Chesney grad ¬ uated from the nonwinners class when she proved best of six others of her age engaged in the four and onehalf furlongs first race Baby Sweep a first tima starter from the stable of J C Gillem gave the winner strong contention and finished in second place while the third award went to Alwin AlwinMaidens Maidens three years old and older en ¬ gaged in the second race and at the end of the five and onehalf furlongs journey Lessing led his nearest rival by the decisive margin of six lengths The aged Billy Birck making her first start in four years offered the strongest contention and fin ished in second place while third went to Running Star 7 Modern Lash was the good thing served to the talent but after racing with the leaders for threeeighths tired and finished last eightThe in the field of eight The popular colors of C T Fishers Dixi ¬ ana stable were carried to a well earned victory in the third race when Flashing Thru speedy son of High Time scored in a drive from C E Davisons Bag Smasher and third went to J C Ellis Moral Miss while the highly regarded and disappointing Fly ¬ ing Don again failed to race to expectations and finished fourth fourthThe The winner quickly got to the front after breaking in good order and it was the aged Fairyman that forced him along at top speed for a half but the old campaigner found the task too strenuous and tired badly in the ensuing drive Then Bag BagDespite Despite the tenday suspension meted out to jockey Joe Guerra he continued his rough riding when in the sixth race he virtually eliminated S Peabodys Technocracy when he was racing strongly with the leaders when he came over so sharply with Phara time that he made Chiavetta pull his mount up to a walk There wasnt much to the con ¬ test thereafter for Charming Sir which benefited greatly by the interference of this strong contender just galloped along in front arid then the weak ride of Grayback which finished second about made victory as safe as could be for the winner which crossed the line two lengths to the good while Technocracy came to third place after being much used getting to cdriterition and weakened in the closing stages
