racing season opened in auspicious fashion at Kenilworth Park today with the running of the Ontario Handicap serving as the outstanding attraction on the program The feature offering was exclusively for horses foaled in Canada and had its decision over the sevenfurlong distance for a purse of 1000 Trainer Fred Schelke sent out the winner in Crofter a son of Cudgel and Step On bearing the silks of Senator Donat Ray mond Montreal owner H C Hatch rep resented by three Kings Plate eligibles furnished the one to race into second place in JEaster Hotter Sweepstaff arid Pen sweep the other two of the entry failed to cut much figure in the running though their efforts suggested they are capable of much better than this race would indicate Lady Marnock came from a long way back to garner the show award Gaffing arid Irish Kid two other Plate eligibles faced the barrier and each dis played a good brand of early speed before dropping back backLONG LONG DELAY AT POST The field was an unruly one and it was nearly twenty minutes before the starter got the field in an alignment to his liking Battle Plane and Syndic set the early pace while Crofter was being reserved Easter Hatter was under restraint and racing along in bold fashion As the earjy pacemakers began to shdw signs of tiring Aimers sent Crofter up and was showing in front as the turn for home was reached Once showing the way the Cudgel colt drew away steadily and was four lengths to the good of the fastfinishing Easter Hatter The latter finished in de termined furlongEaster fashion in the final furlong Easter Hatter came to the outside of the leaders when making his challenge and fin ishcd in such a manner that it is certain to say that he would have been a much more formidable factor at a longer distance He will no doubt be admirably suited by the nine furlongs of the Kings Plate If the Mad Hatter fiveyearold had been successful in the running of the Ontario Handicap he would have become ineligible for the plate i as would either of the other four eligibles if they had won conditions governing the f plate being such that a horse may only win in his juvenile year yearA A day more like midJuly and early r August was the weather on tap The track was at its best and a splendid program of i sport was provided providedHardatit Hardatit a daughter of Haste was much t the best of the half dozen juveniles that started in the opening four and onehalf f furlongs race that introduced the opening days sport The A A Baroni owned miss I left the stalls fast and drawing clear in the early stages never received a threatening r challenge journeyForeigiir at any stage of the journey Foreigiir Lady was the one to follow in i closest pursuit of the winner and took sec ¬ ond place more than two lengths back of E the successful filly Six lengths farther1 r away St Moritz was third Lady Marlboro 3 and King JBonny making their first appear ¬ ance under colors raced greenly and fol ¬ lowed far back throughout throughoutABELS ABELS CLEVER KIDE KIDETrainer Trainer A Whitey Abel rode a clever r race to score with Tremolo in the five and i onehalf furlongs of the second offering = Abel was content to remain behind the fast t pace of Jere Mindreader and Inflate which were out in front disputing the lead t ¬ ership until the turn into the home stretch h was reached Inflate moving along on the e outside was just about to go into the lead d when she bolted to the outside rail Jere e and Mindreader had spent themselves in n their duel for the lead and both began to 0 shorten stride Abel saving all possible c ground on the last turn overtook the falter ¬ ing leaders with a rush when straightened j out in the stretch and easily held safe the e bealted challenge Trigling offered Jere a Xhough tirjng managed to easily take third d from Mindreader MindreaderAnother Another choice was successful when Kieva a scored convincingly in the third The Kiev v filly after beginning last of the seven that tt performed raced wide and after a brief f brush with Tullihoo approaching the six c ¬ teenth post drew away as if much the best bestE t E F Seagrams Tullihoo making her first start since the fall meeting at Bowie e showed fine early speed but had nothing g left when challenged by the victorious is daughter of Kiev This outing should bene fit the Seagramowned filly greatly Canny Scot showed a good effort though never in a position to endanger the leading pair and easily gained third place by three lengths over Distribute Hidden Lore was particu ¬ larly unfortunate being badly jostled going into the far turn and Burrill was forced to snatch up repeatedly repeatedlyThe The largest field of the afternoon paraded postward in the fourth race a claiming af ¬ fair for Canadianbred platers This brought out a dozen starters with the winner turning up in J C Fletchers Clarry G W Brown supplied the one to be second in Taximan and third was the portion of Lady Worth more Toe Dance was installed the choice bul after racing prominently for nearly a half mile stumbled and was pulled up Lady Worthmore showed the most early speec and was soon hustled to the front The Worthmore filly continued to show the way until displaced by Taximan The latter in turn surrendered the lead to Clarry when the latter began his successful charge chargeWhitey Whitey Abel completed a double for the day when he brought Black Target home in advance of All Forlorn and Manya and seven others in the sixth Abel called on all his skill to gain a neck advantage with the son of Black Watch All Fprlprn after setting practically all the pace barely lasted to gain second from the fast going Manya The at ter lacked speed to keep up in the early ly stages but came with a rush arid was rapidly ly wearing dbyh the leaders as the finish line ie was reached
