HERTZ COLORS IN TRIUMPH Watch Him Added to Jamaica Fea ¬ ture Scores Easily Defeats Faireno Caesars Ghost Bit Khay ¬ yam and Others in Excelsior Handi ¬ cap Biff Crowd Present NEW YORK N Y May 5 Mrs John Hertz Watch Him an added starter to the Excelsior Handicap took the Metropolitan Jockey Club feature at Jamaica today The son of Fair Wind was going away at the end of the mile and a sixteenth gallop to beat the Brookmeade Stables Caesars Ghost and Mr Khayyam from the Catawba Farm Stable saved third from Willis Sharp e Kilmers Sun Archer The race carried a net value of 2450 to the winner winnerAnother Another tremendous holiday crowd the equal of the opening day gathering was out lor the sport and conditions for the races were ideal Summerlike weather added to the enjoyment of the crowd and there was much activity in the betting enclosure with none of the crowding and confusion that marked the opening of the season seasonThe The Excelsior Handicap was first run in 1903 and the running Saturday was the twentyseventh renewal In the foster of winners are found some of the best and it has invariably brought a good contest Today eight went to the post and it was fairly run runFrom From a good start Caesars Ghost was first to show but he was closely attended by Mr Khayyam and Faireno while Watch Him was also in the first flight Pomponius one of the W R Coe team was a bit slow from the stalls as was Kerry Patch but both raced dully after getting away and the start could not be blamed for the showing of either eitherIn In the back stretch as Malley moved up with Faireno to join Caesars Ghost Rob ¬ ertson eased the Brookmeade Stable colt back slightly and permitted the Chatterton horse to go past In the meantime Steffen had moved up smoothly with Watch Him and Sun Archer outside Mrs Hertz hope was also coming into contention Mr Khay ¬ yam was soon doing his best but the others were all racing strongly Faireno was still showing the way when the stretch was reached but there Watch Him had headed Caesais Ghost and was going so easily that Malley was forced to drive on the Wood ¬ ward horse Steffen was sitting still on Watch Him and before the furlong post was reached he jumped to the front and it was all over He came along steadily in the last furlong to be winner by two lengths FAIBENO QUITS BADLY BADLYFaireno Faireno when caught quit and as he dropped out of it both Mr Khayyam and Caesars Ghost came again Sun Archer was tiring badly and while he headed Faireno he could not match the rush of the other two Thus it was that Caesars Ghost was second three lengths before Mr Khayyam which beat Sun Archer by half a length lengthThe The second best race of the holiday pro ¬ gram was the Bayside Handicap This brought a double for the G W Ogle silks and for jockey Allen Tipton when Patch pocket winning his second race of the meet ¬ ing galloped to an easy victory H W Max wells Growler raced to second place and William Woodwards Vicar his stablemate was an easy third thirdThere There really was little to this running for Patchpocket which has come to tie a three yearold of some importance was so much best that he just romped along in front all the way to have a winning margin of eight lengths Tipton had hustled him along un ¬ til the back stretch was reached to take a qlear lead and from that time he was at no time fully extended extendedThe The big crowd was treated to a thrill in the opening race when A C Schwartz Little Lie and A W Abbotts Hilise two juvenile fillies that had a seasoning in Florida fought it out over the fivefurlong route The Schwartz miss barely lasted to win and far back of the fighting pair Mrs Paul J Fox1 Dunfox finished third thirdTEN TEN POUNDS TOO MUCH MUCHHilise Hilise was attempting to give Little Lie ten pounds and it proved too much of a handicap The Schwartz filly was rushed into the lead by Haas and Steffen was soon racing after her with Hilise In the early racing he had the High Cloud filly under restraint and she was within striking dis ¬ tance of the lead but Little Lie made the pace so hot that the pair had soon gone into a goodly lead over the others othersWhen When the stretch was reached Steffen made his first serious move with Hilise but Haas was awake to the challenge and as he called on Little Lie she responded with courage Inside the final furlong Little Lie showed signs of tiring and Hilise was draw ¬ ing up with every stride but the Schwartz filly stuck it out to score by a short head Hilise was six lengths before Dunfox which in turn was doing his best to earn that part of the award from Torress TorressThe The start had much to do with the result of the second race It was a six furlongs dash for platers and when G W Ogles Miney Myerson beat the others away deci ¬ sively it gave him an advantage that was to see him safely home Dr I Jacobs Aborigine took second place but only by a narrow margin over Mrs J J Bauers Volta Maid The other starter was West Main and he was outrun all the way wayAfter After Miney Myerson had his big advan ¬ tage leaving the stalls Tipton took him out to a lead of two lengths where he steadied him nicely and saving ground held a safe lead Haas when he had Aborigine in full stride moved up slightly on the winner but he waited for his real challenge until the stretch was reached reachedGoing Going to the stretch turn Haas called on Aborigine and he was soon at a drive on the son of Chilhowee but he could not run down Miney Myerson Then swinging for home Volta Maid showed a new turn of speed and a furlong out ahe had Aborigine headed But Rosen had gone to the outside with the mare while Haas saved ground with his mount This probably decided second place for the gelding only earned the place by a nose and he finished at the heels of Miney Myerson MyersonMrs Mrs E K Burkes Social a threeyear old son of the Turk and Bobs Mary and accordingly a brother to Irenes Bob gradu ¬ ated from the maiden class in the third race at one mile and seventy yards This was another score that had a big element of luck for it appeared that Dunsprite that raced under Mr Pembroke silks was a better horse but he left the post so slowly as to suffer a considerable handicap He raced to second place after closing much ground and Dingle Bay with which he was coupled raced third thirdAs As Cassidy sent the small field away Walls seemed to be caught napping on Dun sprite and the others were on their way before his mount broke Social was off in full stride and George Rose made every use of the advantage Dingle Bay was the one to race after the maiden and they were soon out in a long lead but Walls after his slug ¬ gish start with Dunsprite hurried him along in the first half mile until he was in third place and the others in the field were al ¬ ready beaten beatenDingle Dingle Bay was doing his best in the chase of Social before the stretch was reached but Dunsprite was continuing to gain Walls had moved on the outside with him and in the stretch when he seemed to have a chance to run Social down the son of Dun boyne swerved sharply to the inside When straightened out he could not make it and was beaten a length Dingle Bay was an ¬ other four lengths back but well before Mathias which was fourth fourthFrank Frank Kearns Nose In ridden by J Rosen was a driving winer of the final race of the day by a short margin over James River while Foxland Hall was third James River was probably best but when caught in clo e quarters in the early stages was taken up repeatedly and then sent to the outside in the stretch run
