Here and There i on the Turf i Cavalcade vs Equipoise EquipoiseYears Years Most Natural Race RaceMata Racei i Mata Hari Should Win Saturday And So Should Rose Cross Theyre talking about a special sweep ¬ stakes with Cavalcade and Equipoise as the principals This is the natural race of the season and lucky will be the association able to hold it because a long time has gone by since there has been such an outstanding threeyearold rnd great older horse out in the same year and the public is eager for just such a rcce Of course the event is contingent on several factors but that is to be expected considering it would not be held until after the running of the Arlington Classic on July 14 or several weeks away awayIt It is not the custom in this country for a firstclass threeyearold to go against a capable older horse at weightforage in spring or summer but the end of July may not be considered too early by Robert A Smith trainer of the tripleDerby winner for Cavalcade to step out of his division and take on such a stout veteran as Equipoise However Smith thinks more and more of his horse especially after he had seen him mow down two large fields in less than a quarter mile each and is perfectly willing to stack him up against any foe foeShould Should Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloane owner of Cavalcade or her representative confer with Cornelius Whitney about a meeting between the two horses they probably would settle the issue of the distance with few words At weightforage a mile and a quarter appears the natural route for the two to clash Equipoise has proved on nu ¬ merous occasions that he can really go to town at ten furlongs and more so with only 126 pounds to carry about this being some less than to what he has become accus ¬ tomed Cavalcade will be called upon to tote 114 pounds and with a dozen pounds off what he has packed in his last four starts he can be expected to be in a running mood moodNo No race between the two horses can be expected until after the Classic which Smith eays will be Cavalcades next start even x t v fCojtf totted on twelfth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page though the son of Lancegaye might find the Latonia Derby ten days hence a mere gal ¬ lop The Saturday after the Classic is the 10000 Arlington Handicap at a mile and onequarter in which both horses are en ¬ tered Ordinarily Cavalcade could be ex ¬ pected to duck this race to take a slight rest before going in the Travers Stakes at Sara ¬ toga while Equipoise if the handicapper is consistent will be assigned 132 or more pounds and his connections are trying to get away from such imposts But a richer spe ¬ cial would draw Cavalcade and the lighter weight would appeal to the Whitney board of strategy Such a race say with 15000 added money and 5000 a side should be worthwhile to the association putting it on Mata Hari is going to run in a race Satur ¬ day she can win It is the Illinois Oaks at Washington Park and the fast Dixiana filly has only to be a shadow of herself to defeat the competition likely to be arranged against her The distance is a mile and an eighth which is just about a furlong farther than Mata Hari wants to go when she is meeting firstclass threeyearolds but against a non ¬ descript bunch of fillies the daughter of Peter Hastings will find the route the least of her worries With such a onesided affair probable in the Illinois Oaks which has been usual in such races in recent years there is no wonder why they have lost favor with track managements managementsWith With Aqueduct following Jamaica and Belmont Park in having a successful meet ¬ ing despite considerable illness among the horses the Queens County Jockey Club may be expected to jack up the value of its purses for the future One may expect with con ¬ fidence that the Dwyer Stakes will be re ¬ turned to a value that will insure it of the prestige it attained when horses like Man o War Purchase American Flag Crusader Blue Larkspur Twenty Grand and Gallant Fox were featured featuredThis This years running of the Dwyer promises to have but few starters and of these the Manhasset Stables Rose Cross not a bril ¬ liant horse but a steady runner appears much the best The outstanding threeyear olds are not being attracted to the race but are being freshened up for richer engage ¬ ments in the future With the Dwyer re ¬ turned to its former worth Aqueducts sum ¬ mer special once more should be a magnet for the countrys best colts of Derby age
