, , I MARKS RACER TRIUMPHS ♦ Marooned Scores in Driving Finish With Mr. Sponge at Detroit. ■ Upsets and Surprises Order of Day at Fair Grounds — Ideal Conditions for Sport. DETROIT, Mich., July 18.— Before one of the largest week-day crpwds of the meeting Leo J. Marks Marooned was a driving winner of the Three Rivers Handicap, the sixth and feature event of an eight-race program offered at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. Second went to King Brothers Mr. Sponge, with Mrs. A. M. Creechs Desert Call third, two lengths before Young Brothers Penn-cote. Foxiana and Essential completed the field that contested the six furlongs, over which Marooned ran in 1:12 under 109 pounds. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the sport, which was productive of several thrilling finishes and many mild surprises. There was a quick start to the feature, but once aligned the small field of six got away in good order, with Essential the first to show in front. Soon afterwards, however, H. Dabson drove the winner and favorite to the front and in the run to the stretch he established a two lengths advantage over Desert Call. At that stage S. Young steered Mr. Sponge through on the inside and, in the final furlong, he began to shorten Marooneds advantage. Dabson was forced to put Marooned under strong pressure in withstanding Mr. Sponges challenge. The latter defeated Desert Call three-quarters of a length for the second portion of the ,200 purse, that was worth 50 to the winner. PENNCOTE TIRES. After holding third place for a half mile Penncote tired, but lasted to head Foxiana. Essential, the well-backed second choice, was never a factor. Arthur Goldblatt saddled a winner for I Sam Furst, Cincinnati owner, when Earle | Maxwell got up to beat Shady Past, Miss Angelo and three other juveniles that competed. Slow to reach his stride, the winner responded to strong urging after reaching the stretch to wear Shady Past down in the last stages. While Explorer quit badly after offering Shady Past a strong challenge in the run to the stretch, the latter saved ground throughout and held on gamely after giving way to the winner. Mint Bird, slight favorite, was never prominent. Mrs. R. McIIvains Dark Mist scored her second victory in as many starts this year when she was an easy winner of the second race. After leading for five furlongs of the three-quarters dash, Le Bruyere was second, with Bright Bubble third. While Le Bruyere, Flo M. and Through Omond were showing the way down the back stretch, F. Fernandez was bringing the mare forward gradually and, after heading Le Bruyere in the final furlong, she drew away to a length and one-half advantage at the finish. Although quitting fast. Le Bruyere, which was coupled with Don Vern, and the favorite, held on well to beat the fast-closing Bright Bubble a half length for the second award. DORIS B. WINS. The useful and consistent Doris B., which races for Mrs. S. Orr, provided the first victory of tha afternoon for the talent when she was ridden out in accounting for the third race. Nine started the three-quarters dash with tha lightly regarded Annarita second, and Midson accounting for third. Saved back of the pace of Midson and Annarita during the opening half mile, the winner wrested the lead from the tiring Midson in the final furlong, but despite establishing a good lead, R. Montgomery had her under pressure at the end. Swifty. which came in for good support, weakened after offering a mild bid entering the stretch. The consistent Irenes Bob made it two in a row here and his seventh triumph of the year when he carried J. F. Sweeneys colors to a driving victory in the fourth race. While Sun Monk came from far back to finish a length back of the winner and three lengths before Fredrick, Blue Em-, peror, which enjoyed favoritism, refused to extend himself and trailed throughout. Frank Mauro had the winner in the van immediately and, while Fredrick was offering him a stern bid in the run to the stretch. Sun Monk was improving his position fast after being the last in motion. He appeared Continued on twenty-sixth page. Leading from soon after the start to the finish, Fine and Fullwoods Good Scout was an easy winner of the fifth race. Second went to On Leave, with Representative third. While the winner was only shaken up after reaching the stretch, On Leave and Representative were forced to come from far back to earn their awards. The favored Well Built tired after reaching third position in the stretch and finished fifth.
