JUVENILES IN FEATURE » Red Rod Scores His Second Straight Victory Under Good Ride. » Track in Good Condition After Torrential Rains — Large Crowd Despite Extreme Heat. ♦ DETROIT, Mich., July 20— Two-year-olds performed in the best event on the program, consisting of claiming races, at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. The third straight victory for the choices occurred when Tom Keatings Red Rod scored his second straight triumph and the third of his career in accounting for the fourth race. At the end of the five and a half furlongs, Gilbert Rileys Heros Lady, equal choice with the winner, was second, with W. F. McCanless Maple Hussy third. Benefited by long and hard work on the part of track superintendent Norman Miller and his crew, the racing strip was whipped into fair shape for the program, after the hardest rain of the meeting fell in this sector yesterday afternoon. The hottest day of the year failed to keep the enthusiasts away and a crowd that vied with the best week-day gathering here was on hand for the sport. There was a quick start in the juvenile event, with F. Fernandez having the winner in the lead immediately. Sun Lure made a game effort at matching strides with the Keating youngster but, after the opening quarter the winner drew away to a long lead and Fernandez had him under stout restraint with a three lengths advantage over Heros Lady at the end. The latter reached second position after three-eighths but, although she was the best of the others, the co-favorite failed to menace the winner. While Maple Hussy was forced to come from far back to earn the third award, South Bend, which came in for good support, was unprepared at the start and, after J. Marinelli made a game effort to reach a contending position, he eased South Bend in the final quarter. Over the slow and soft strip Red Rod carried the top impost of 114 pounds and ran the distance in 1:08=3. FINALLY MAKES GOOD. After three unsuccessful efforts, Ferguson and Hawkins Miss Wise found a field she could beat, and at the end of the five furlongs first race she led Mah Grant by a neck. Third went to Uptodate. Nine maiden youngsters started, with Claire Critchfield hustling the winner to the front soon after the start, which found Almac and the stanchly supported McCarthy unprepared. After attaining a two-length lead in the fun to the stretch, the winning daughter of Wise Counsellor and Delico drew away when Uptodate threatened and then held on gamely as Mah Grant drove down on the inside with her belated charge. After his strong threat, Uptodate tired and was beaten a length and one-half for the place award. The placed trio dominated the running. The veteran, Cog-Air, scored his second straight victory when he carried Nix Sc Hunters colors to an easy and popular triumph over Maetico, Ramus and four others that competed in the second race. Lucky to escape the interference in the stretch which eliminated Proud Princess and retarded Maetico, the winner, racing on the inside, took command in the final furlong and drew away to a two lengths advantage at the end. After Ramus and Lanier had dominated the pace for more than a half mile, the latter came over on Maetico and blocked Proud Princess, which was finishing boldly. Maetico, lucky to recover from the mishap, beat Ramus by a nose for second, while Dronet was forced to ease Proud Princess up. STOCK MARKET AGAIN. Another veteran of many campaigns scored his second straight success when the Oak Tree Stables Stock Market accounted for the third race. At the end of the six furlongs dash, for which there were eight starters and the winner a 1 to 2 choice. Gracious Gift was second, a length back and Continued on nineteenth page. Terry for three-eighths and, after attaining a big advantage, Gracious Gift offered a strong bid midway of the stretch. Critch-field, who was completing a double, kept at the seven-year-old son of Luke McLuke and he maintained his margin to the end. L M. Biggs Incandescent provided the first big upset of the afternoon when she was returned the winner of the fifth race. Ladino was second, with Tractable, coupled with Running Heel in the mutuel field and second choice in the wagering, third. After being the chief cause of the delay at the start, Tractable rushed into command and after disposing of the favored Blackstrap in the opening three-eighths, he drew away to a long lead. Midway of the stretch Incandescent headed Tractable and increased his advantage to a length and a half at the finish. From a slow beginning, Ladino worked his way forward through the middle of the field to gain the place award. Running Heel was left at the start. *
