The Withers, a time honored fixture for three-year-olds at one mile, will be decided for the sixtieth time at Belmont Park Saturday afternoon. Named in honor of one of Americas leading sportsmen and a stake that leading stables strive to win,, nine of the aspirants for the three-year-old crown are programmed to match strides. Heading the list and a probable odds-on choice is Omaha, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and now striving to emulate the feat of J. K. L. Ross Sir Barton and to have his name inscribed upon the roster of winners of the Derby, Preakness, Withers and Belmont. To jockey "Smoky" Saunders will be entrusted the task of guiding the Belair Studs Omaha, and confidence" was manifest ln every action and word in the entourage presided over by James Fitzsimmons. Trainer Bill Brehnan has named Gillie and Plat. Eye for the event. Gillie accounted- for the Santa Anita Derby and Brennan is sanguine over, his chances. This fellow runs smoothly for jockey Coucci, and to the Bronx Italian will be given the riding assignment. . "Bob" Smith will saddle Psychic Bid and Special Agent for the Brookmeade Stable. Special Agent made his seasonal debut against some swift company early this week, and he turned in: a good effort. However, Smith has not decided upon his plan of campaign. Whether he will send Psychic Bid to the front to cut out a sizzling pace for his stablemate or issue other riding instructions were not decided upon. Rosemont is another that is bound to show improvement over his recent efforts at Belmont, In which he bowed to Plat Eye. Nautch is a speedy going fellow, while Sound Advice and St. Bernard complete the field. The estimated value of the Withers is 3,210.
