Here and There on the Turf "Activity of Derby Hopes In- ! ! creases J Brevity Going Smoothly at Hia-leali New York Colony to Increase Sangreal Looks Good in Texas With the Kentucky Derby only four weeks from next Saturday, activity of those three-year-olds which might start in the 0,000 affair is perking up all over the country. Seasoned candidates are racing and working in Texas and Florida, and others are being asked for speed work at public and private tracks in Kentucky, New York, Maryland, New Jersey and South Carolina. With the opening of the Maryland season at Bowie Wednesday the eligibles in that sector will get the opportunity of proving their worth. Meanwhile the New York and New Jersey colts are awaiting the opening of the metropolian season at Jamaica, April 15, before getting a taste of competition. The Kentucky hopes cannot race until a week before the Derby running, ja.t which time the Churchill Downs meeting will be inaugurated, but, judging from reports emanating from Louisville and Lexington, the several prospects are moving along steadily in their preparation and will be ready whether or not they possess the class to be formidable factors. In his last workout, which occurred two days ago, Brevity breezed six furlongs in 1:16 at Hialeah Park, which shows that Pete Coyne is going along easy with Joseph E. Wideners speedy colt. The son of Sickle has been the reigning favorite since he equaled Discoverys world record for the mile and one furlong in galloping off with the Florida Derby. Trainer Coyne has not selected the exact date for Brevitys departure for Churchill Downs, but undoubtedly he is watching carefully the weather reports from Louisville. Favorable conditions in Kentucky may cause him to ship the Wid-ener colt most any day now, otherwise he will continue to mark time in Florida. Brevity has the muscling-up process behind him, and his wind is in good condition, so Coyne hasnt as much to worry about as the trainers of the northern candidates. Hollyrood at Belmont Park and Granville, White Cockade and Snark at Aqueduct arc the principal Derby hopes now going through-their paces in New York, but they will be joined before very long by Memory Book and Brush Hook, the Greentree Stables promising candidates. The later two have been doing their preliminary work at the farm near Holmdel, N. J., but the time has come when trainer William Brennan is thinking, about taking advantage of the bet--cr facilities offered at Belmont Park. Postage. Due is abo;ut the best known of the Derby-eligibles training in Maryland, but his owner, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, is doubtful that his large stable includes a first class three-year-old prospect. Down at Columbia, S. C, are several candidates, including Marshall Fields Tintagel and the Brookmeade Stables Delphinium, and if they have trained satisfactorily should be well advanced in their preparation because of the mild climate. Meanwhile the Derby public is giving much thought to the running of the Derby Consolation at Tropical Park, Saturday, and the Texas Derby at Arlington Downs a couple of weeks later. Dnieper and Bright Plumage, which finished second and third behind Brevity in the Florida Derby, with inches separating them, are the two leading candidates for Tropicals closing feature. At Arlington Downs, Sangreal has been added to the list of prominent Texas Derby possibilities, due to his clean-cut victory over Bay Bubble and Ttennob in a six-furlong dash, although it was his first start since last year. This son of Sir Gallahad III. and Hayai gives promise of going over a distance of ground and he may be an even more formidable representative of the Milky Way Farms Stable than The Fighter. Boston Pal and Silas are occupying the limelight at Churchill Downs at the present time, but neither is accounted in the first flight of candidates and they may be shuffled to the background as soon as the stars begin arriving in Derby town. Over at Lexington, Coldstream is doing all asked of him at Coldstream Farm, by trainer Alex Gordon, and H. J. Thompson has overcome all obstacles so far in .his preparation of Banister, Bow to Me and Bien Joli at Idle Hour Farm. Pharosay and Count Morse, the Derby hopefuls of Warren . Wright, also are well advanced at Calumet Farm, where trainer Bert Williams has been able to use the private track almost daily for some time. These colts may prove more formidable later in the season, however, than around Derby time. Another eligible in the Blue Grass is C. V. Whitneys Triumphant. Virginias candidate is Ned Reigh, Willis Sharpe Kilmers capable colt. No definite word has been received as to the late progress of the Walden winner in his Derby preparation, however, but he may be expected at Havre de Grace coon.
