SEVENTY-FOUR ENTERED IN PREAKNESS J INCREASE OVER 1935 Only Few of Best Juveniles of Last Year Among Absentees. Brevity, Coldstream, The Fighter and Sangreal Not Named Tintagel and Hollyrood Nominated. BALTIMORE, Md., April 11 The Maryland Jockey Club today announced the nominations for the Preakness Stakes, which will be run at Pimlico, May 16. Seventy-four entries were received for the forty-fifth renewal of the 5,000 prize for three-year-olds. The distance is one mile and three-sixteenths. Among those named are four fillies and nine geldings. The Preakness candidates are owned by forty-eight sportswomen and sportsmen. Last year fifty-four entries were received. Forty-seven of the Preakness three-year-olds also were named for the Kentucky Derby, which will be run at Churchill Downs, Louisville, May 2. For the latter event 102 nominations were filed this year. About the only horses of any note which are not eligible for the two classics are Joseph E. Wideners Brevity, Coldstream Stud Stables Coldstream, and Milky Way Farms Stables Sang-real and The Fighter. They are in the Derby but not in the Preakness. LARGEST NOMINATORS. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, William Woodward Belair Stud Stable, whose Gallant Fox in 1930 and Omaha in 1935 won the Dcrby-Preakness double, and E. R. Bradley, whose Burgoo King achieved the same feat in 1932, head the list of nominators, with four entries each. Vanderbilt named Postage Due, Winter Sport, Re-Election and Speed to Spare. Woodwards candidates are Isolater, Granville, Valse and Merry Pete. Bradley nominated Banister, Bien Joli, Bow to Me and Bow and Arrow. Winners of prominent stakes last year named for the Preakness are Tintagel, Belmont Park Futurity; Hollyrood, Pimlico Futurity and Nursery Handicap; Grand Slam, Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Arlington Futurity and Pimlico Nursery; Ned Reigh, Walden Handicap, Junior Champion and Babylon Handicap; Postage Due, United States Hotel and Eastern Shore Handicap; Delphinium, National Stallion; Memory Book, Spaulding Lowe Jenkins Handicap; Maeriel, Juvenile Stakes, Belmont Park; Wise Duke, Hialeah Juvenile Championship and Aberdeen; White Cockade, Youthful; Split Second, Selima; Speed to Spare, Maryland Futurity; Snark, Great American; Bright Plumage, Endurance Handicap; Bright Light, Bowie Kindergarten, and Bien Joli, East View Stakes. As three-year-olds, the following Preakness candidates are stake winners of 1936: Maeriel, Bahama Handicap, and He Did, Santa Anita Derby. ESTABLISHED IN 1873. The Preakness, from 1873, when it was first run, was one of the leading features of the Pimlico spring meetings to 1889, when it lapsed. It was revived on a more pretentious scale in 1909 and has been run annually since then. In 1918 it drew so many entries that it was run in two divisions, War Cloud winning one and Jack Hare Jr. the other. The Preakness was named after M. H. Sanfords good colt, by Lexington Bay Leaf, which won the famous Dinner Party Stakes, afterwards renamed the Dixie, at the inaugural Pimlico meeting in October, 1870, defeating Thomas W. Doswells Virginia-bred I Ecliptic and T. G. Moores Foster, a famous four-miler. Preakness was a village in New Jersey, where the Sanford Stock Farm was located. The fact that the colt was deemed good enough to be named for his birthplace indicates the esteem in which he was held. I SEVENTY-FOUR ENTERED IN PREAKNESS Continued from first page. winning the much talked of Dinner Party Stakes, Preakness and Pimlico became so firmly associated in the minds of the racing public that a meeting at the old track without a memorial to his prowess was, in the opinion of Gov. Oden Bowie, then president of the Maryland Jockey Club, and his associates, unthinkable, so the Preakness was added to the stake program at the Hill Top track. In recent years the famous Woodlawn Vase has been added as a trophy annually through the courtesy of the successive winning owners of the Preakness. It is coveted by thoroughbred owners, particularly if they also are the breeders of the winner. William Woodward, whose Omaha won the 1935 Preakness, has agreed to offer the Woodlawn Vase in competition again for this years renewal.
