J 6 Vanderbi It H orses Account for Both Stake Races at Bowie S a HANDICAP PAIR ONE-TWO Purple Knight Victorious in Southern Maryland Kindergarten Stakes to Irrepressible BOWIE, Md., April 11. Purple Knight, double stake winner during 1935, scored his first victory of the present season as he drove past the final pole a head in advance of his stablemate, Good Harvest, in the Southern Maryland Handicap, main attraction on the closing program at Prince Georges Park this afternoon. Five lengths back, Steel Cutter managed to gain third honors. The score of the Bright Knight Marsh Violet colt gave young Alfred Vanderbilt a stake double as his home-bred Irrepressible had won the Kindergarten Stakes a little earlier. The two-ply triumph for the Maryland outfit was popular with the Easter Saturday crowd, one estimated at 18,000, as the entry was best fancied in the principal race while the two-year-old ruled second choice in the haf-mile dash. Purple Knight added ,975 to his owners account and Irrepressible won ,435. The first named showed .90 in the mutuels, with the youngster paying .70. The days sport was decided under threatening skies, though the promise of rain failed to materialize. The water-soaked track was deep in mud and horses with a fancy for such footing dominated the sport. Despite the going, form was well observed in the majority of dashes. Sammy Renick hustled Good Harvest away from the post to open up a three lengths lead in the first quarter and set the pace for the entire journey. First he put away New Deal and then, on the final turn, easily withstood the challenge of Bright Light. He saved ground at the head of the stretch and was ridden out, just failing to take the award from his stablemate. Purple Knight was rated along close to the pace of his companion and Knapp did not urge him hard until the final quarter. He came a trifle wide in the stretch and finished rapidly in the middle of the track, to get up in the final yards. The battle between the Sagamore pair had them far in advance at the end. Steel Cutter was shy on early speed, with Westrope saving ground on the inside. Under punishment through the stretch, the gray gelding got up in time to take third money from Lynx Eye by a length. The latter trailed the field early and made" up considerable ground in the last three furlongs. Bright Light made a bold run from the half-mile post to the quarter, and then was done. New Deal had early speed but was done after half a mile and did not favor the footing. Chatmoss Continued on ninth page. The score of Irrepressible in the Bowie Kindergarten Stakes was the first victory in the history of the race for a youngster from the Sagamore Farm. Johnny Bejshak had the home-bred daughter of Balko and Iristados off swiftly and she had the speed to race Whiscenda into subjection by the time the head of the stretch was reached. Driven hard, she drew away from her company to be four lengths in front of Scintillator at. the final post, with the public choice, Balkanese, a head off the runner-up. He just got up in time to snatch third money from the tiring Whiscenda. Scintillator, a first-time starter, always was a factor and finished steadily along the final three-sixteenths. Balkanese began slowly and dropped out of contention in the first furlong. Westrope took him to the outside turning for home and the Balko colt finished with a belated rush on the outside. Whiscenda had early speed but tired, while Happy Road ran a disappointing race. He made a brief spurt on the turn and then tired. Lovely Girl, a six-time winner for the Bo-mar Stable during 1935, turned in a powerful performance in her first of the season to come from the last place and register by three parts of a length over Patsey Begone, the early pacemaker in the six furlongs Tred Avon Purse. Three lengths back, Nou-veau Riche staggered home in third place. The Detroit-owned daughter of Vito and Loveliness came in for strong public support, gjoing.to the post 7 to J choice. The break was an unusually fast one for Lovely Girl, as she was away a bad last in the six-horse field. She trailed the field for the first half of the journey, but moved up rapidly thereafter, coming with a mighty rush on the outside through the stretch to be up in the last twenty yards and win going away. Patsey Begone had the speed to take the lead from Nouveau Riche in the back stretch run and drew clear making the turn. She drew away sightly at the top of the stretch but started to weaken inside the" furlong pole sending Carl Hanford to the whip. While she hung on fairly well under punishment, she was unable to withstand Lovely Girls challenge. Nouveau Riche always was a forward factor, but right at the end the Display filly tailed off as if short. Miss Twinkle quit badly after showing early foot. Torita appears to have staled off. Distracting, colorbearer of Dick Pending, track superintendent at Bowie, had little trouble racing to a three lengths victory in the initial six furlongs claimer. The ebony jockey, J. Brooks, rated the Distraction-Crimson Rambler filly in third place to the top of the stretch and chen brought her around the pacemaking Chiliad and away to an easy lead. Eddie Wracks final spurt carried him past the judges three lengths in advance of the early leader.
