REVIVAL OF FAMOUS j ! CALIFORNIA STUD I I i. -.------- 4 The announcement that Miss Dana M. Burns is to reopen the Hopeland Ranch of Burns and Waterhouse in California is another promise for the success of the sport in that state. Hopeland was dispersed twenty-five years ago, after a most successful period of racing by the confederacy of Burns and Waterhouse. Colonel Dan Burns and his partner, Clarence Waterhouse, were two of the oldest patrons of horse racing on the Pacific Coast at that time. The Burns Handicap, for many years a 0,000 race, for three-year-olds and upward, at a mile and a quarter, was named for Colonel Burns. The Waterhouse Cup was named for the other partner. Many first class horses bore the colors of this stable in the olden days. They included Eddie Jones, Maxnic, Altamax and Shasta Water. An estimate can be made of the importance of this stable when at the opening of San Francisco in 1898, their horses swept the card of five races. During that meeting, which covered the 1898-1899 seasons, the horses from Hopeland took fifty-two races. At that time, Clarence Waterhouse was-frequently referred to as the silent partner of the firm because of his quiet and unassuming demeanor. No matter how great the prize or the glory which one of the Burns and Waterhouse horses won in some turf fixture, Mr. Waterhouse was never known to become excited to the pitch of raising his voice above its normal tone. It was his way through the years he devoted to the sport of racing thoroughbreds, but no one liked to see his colors come down in front better than he did. Their first horse of renown was Lovdal, which finished second in the Burns Handicap on two occasions. They got together an extensive stable and won recognition on tracks throughout the country with James McCormick as trainer and Eddie Jones as stable jockey. With Supercargo, a son of Friar Rock, and Aapinwall, another son of the same sire, which have been standing at the J. H. Ros-siter farm, to head the stud, the prominence of her forefathers may be gained by Miss Dana Burns.
