BASHFORD MANOR TEST » Sweepalot Shows Fine Speed to Qualify for Saturdays Feature. Takes Castle Wood Purse by Safe Margin Over Fast Express and Ginocchio. • ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Seven two-year-olds, all eligible for the ,000 added Bashford Manor Stakes, to be renewed Saturday, had a public trial for that important engagement when they were brought together to race four and one-half furlongs in the Castle Wood Purse, todays feature at Churchill Downs. The array of potential stakes performers included Milky Way Farms Fast Express, and he was installed favorite, but Dixianas Sweepalot, gelded son of Sweep All and Pelota, proved the winner. Traveling the distance on a fast track in :53, he won by three lengths. Ginocchio, a newcomer to racing, furnished by the R. L. Baker stable, finished third, lapped on Fast Express and with only a head to spare over E. R. Bradleys Biologist. Dehor, Gene Wagers and Arabs Arrow completed the field. In extending the sweep of Downs juvenile races by Dixiana colorbearers, Sweepalot raced from behind a sizzling pace, yet hardly was fully extended and by his performance sounded a note of warning that he may be hard to master in the Bashford Manor Stakes. As Fast Express and Ginocchio set a fast pace, Charles Stevenson rated the Detroit-owned victor under snug restraint and in third place and when slightly urged he bounded to the front with such ease as to clearly establish his superiority, though the duel between the two early leaders left them with little when Sweepalot hurled his challenge. Biologist, which at one stage was almost six lengths back, also finished with keen speed and in a stride or two more might have overtaken both Ginocchio and Fast Express. As it was, he missed the third award by a head. He was second choice to Fast Express, the winner returning .80 for straight as the third choice. Continued on fifteenth page. BASHFORD MANOR TEST Continued from first page. With fair weather prevailing there was another large crowd on hand, and interesting sport was the order though a majority of the winners won by decisive margins. In one of the most thrilling finishes of the meeting, Capitalist, one of the mainstays of P. H. Carpenters stable, took the three-quarter opening race for his second win in three starts since the opening. Showing speed from the start and withstanding several challenges, the Carpenter six-year-old emerged with a neck margin over Babeson. A nose back came Ramrod, with Cherokee Red only a head farther back. Nine started. Capitalists early pace was forced by Idle Victory and as sh-e fell back Ramrod came up to give challenge. Entering the final furlong, Ramrod pushed his head in front but later tired, Capitalist returning to the front, where he remained as Babeson out-finished Ramrod. The latter was th-e choice. Busy Lutrecia, juvenile sister to Republic, a flashy performer of several seasons back, made a runaway of the second race over eleven other maidens of her age and at four and one-half furlongs. Ridden by M. Garner, the Rock Home Stable miss worked her way up to the front in the first quarter and then proceeded to make quite a show of her company. Through the final straightaway sh-e increased her advantage with every stride and her margin over Jay Bee Jay. which accounted for the place award at tho wire, was six lengths. Col. Julian, which was the third to complete the distance, trailed Jay Bee Jay by a length. Mibs, which finished in fourth place, and Threems, which was never much of a factor, shared favoritism with the mutuel field that included the winner, Lockstep, and Off Side. Bert Kennedy, one of the leading riders a decade ago, saddled his first winner since entering the trainers ranks when the Char-Lei Stables Nessus, a well supported favorite, was best of eleven other older maidens that met over one mile in the third race. Ridden by Robert Finnerty, the winner a three-year-old Stick To — Supreme Lady gelding, reached the end of the eight furlongs a length before Lost Laughter, which led Co hort Las? by two lengths for second. During the run to the stretch. Lord Dalton showed the way, but he gave way to Lost Laughter, which was unable to withstand the winners determined challenge. Although Wise Dora was done after five-eighths. Bardoga, one of the choices, showed nothing to merit support. Hidden Dust, owned by W. J. and H. W. Young, local patrons, and with M. Calvert in the saddle, raced to her second victory in as many starts during the meeting when she experienced no real trouble turning back Skalkahoe, Erebus, Surcouf and four others in the fourth race. She set all the pace and for more than five furlongs led by some three lengths, but, with victory clinched, was taken in hand, thus permitting Skalkahoe to shorten the gap. The latters final margin over Erebus was two lengths, while Surcouf, after sulking early in the race, finished fast i to be a length farther back.
