a--------"--"------------"-* J Here and There on the Turf — Bold Venture Appears Preak- ! ness Choice J Granville Gets Chance for Vin- ! dication I Bow and Arrow Best Shown J in Maryland j Thursday Seeks Dixie Triumph j Next of the important three-year-old specials is the Preakness, which has been put back until it follows the Kentucky Derby by two weeks and brings to a close Pimlicos annual spring meeting. Some of the Derby contestants, including the victorious Bold Venture, are expected to start in the Maryland Jockey Clubs spring fixture, but the field for the mile and three-sixteenths event, to which 5,000 is added, is not likely to be as large as that attracted by the Blue Grass classic. Brevity will not be able to use the Preakness to settle his score with Bold Venture because he is not eligible, owner Joseph E. Widener and trainer Pete Coyne having reached the conclusion early that the two events were too close together, even though two weeks intervene. Therefore Brevity goes to Belmont Park to prepare for the Withers Stakes, at one mile, and the Belmont Stakes, at a mile and a half. Max Hirsch, trainer of Bold Venture, also doesnt care to have Morton Schwartz racer go to the post too frequently, but the son of St. Germans — Possible is an eligible to the Preakness. He has been returned to his headquarters at Belmont Park and will take things easy during the next few days, after which Hirsch can be expected to make up his mind about shipping the colt to Baltimore. Bold Ventures appearance in the Maryland event will add much interest to it, because Granville is among the certain starters, barring a training mishap. The Belair Studs colt, unfortunate enough to stumble and unseat his rider at the start of the Derby, was shipped directly to Pimlico from Churchill Downs with Teufel and Merry Pete, and the Preakness will offer him a chance to vindicate himself. Of the other Derby starters that may accept in the Preakness, the most likely are Teufel, Merry Pete, Bien Joli and Grand Slam. The impost of 126 pounds apparently prevsnted Teufel from displaying the same sort of performance at Churchill Downs that characterized his Wood Memorial Stakes victory. Bien Joli had but little excuse in the Derby, but the race may have done him good. In so far as conditioning is concerned. Grand Slam was strongly ridden to gain a good position in the early stages of N the Derby, but then he dropped back badly. That was not his race, and more than likely his feet were stinging him, so until that trouble is overcome or he gets a muddy track, little can be expected of the Chance Play colt. Unless some other Preakness candidate qualifies very handsomely, Bold Venture promises to rule a very substantial favorite. The Preakness eligibles racing in Maryland this spring that may be regarded as candidates include E. R. Bradleys Bow and Arrow, Branncastle Farms Challephen, Walter M. Jeffords Jean Bart and Giant Killer, and Mrs. Marion Dupont Somervilles Transporter, while colts that may be sent from New York are Greentree Stables Brush Hook and Memory Book, and Brookmeade Continued on ninth page. 9 HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. Stables Delphinium. Bow and Arrow, a gelding by Whichone and Beaming Over, appears the best of this group, having accounted for two starts at Havre de Grace. Elaborate plans have been made to publicize the Preakness, and old Pimlico may be expected to entertain a capacity crowd a week from Saturday if the weather is ideal. Thursday, which now races for R. A. , Moore, is expected to try for the Dixie Han- dicap, Pimlicos annual spring feature for older horses, which is to be renewed Satur-! day. The veteran Mars gelding twice has accounted for the Riggs Handicap, the autumn counterpart of the Dixie, and he is interested in the 0,000 purse being offered for the latter race this year. In preparation for the mile and three-sixteenths event, Thursday has been working steadily at Bel- mont Park, his latest effort having been ! over the mile and a furlong distance. Howe Stables Cycle, winner of the Paumonok Handicap at Jamaica and a sharp contestant in the Philadelphia at Havre de Grace, is being groomed for the engagement, while Roman Soldier and Mantagna may accept if they come out of their efforts at six furlongs today in good shape. Roman Soldier, winner of the Detroit and Texas Derbys last year and runner-up in the [ Kentucky Derby, hasnt started since the; ! Arlington Classic last summer. Other likely i Dixie starters are Chatmoss, First Minstrel, | I Stand Pat and a pair of A. G. Vanderbilts j ! eligibles from among Gallant Mac, Good i Gamble, Good Harvest and Purple Knight, j 1 depending on the track conditions.
