LATONIA STAKES CLOSE TODAY Derby Carries 5,000 for Mile and a Quarter Contest. ♦ Fifty-Fourth Renewal of Covington Head-liner Under Allowance Conditions — Six Other Stakes Offered. » LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Nominations for the Latonia Derby and six other stakes to be run during the thirty-seven day meeting of the Latonia Jockey Club, opening ! May 23, close at midnight tomorrow, Wednesday, and the manner in which horsemen are supporting the features indicates that the Covington track will have its best racing in many years. The increased value of the stake3 and overnight races already has had the desired effect and a number of stables j I which previously had planned to race at Chicago and elsewhere, and which already had made stall reservations, have rearranged I their programs so as to remain here in i Kentucky for the long season at the Old i Milldale course. The Latonia Derby, the distance of which, last year, was decreased from a mile and a half to a mile and a quarter, this year will have an added value of 5,000 and indications are that it will attract many of the best three-year-olds in training at the time of its renewal on the opening day of the meeting. Morton L. Schwartz Kentucky Derby win-| ner, Bold Venture, is expected to be among | those nominated, particularly so because for i him the race will be worth an additional ! ,000. The Latonia management annually offers another ,000 to the winner of the Latonia Derby, if that winner is the Kentucky Derby champion. So far no horse has been able to win both the Churchill Downs and Latonia classics. In addition to Bold Venture, a number of three-year-olds which competed in the Kentucky Derby and some others which were I not ready for that contest are expected to i be listed among the nominees for the La-j tonia Derby. The race which will be run J this year for the fifty-fourth time will be i decided under allowance conditions, conces-I sions in weight ranging between five and j twelve pounds. The other six stakes on the attractive I Latonia program also will be liberally sup-i ported, according to William H. Shelley, rac-i ing secretary, both here at Churchill Downs and at Latonia. Each of them will have an 1 added value of ,000, which marks a res-| toration of the richness of the stakes of the pre-depression period. Last year these features carried only ,500 in added money. The first of these ,000 fixtures is the Quickstep Handicap, a six furlong dash for three-year-olds and upward, to be run on May 30, and the next the Clipsetta Stakes, two-year-old filly race at five and a half furlongs, scheduled for June 6. On the following Saturday, the Enquirer Handicap, a run of a mile and a sixteenth, for three-: year-olds and upward, will be presented and on June 20, two-year old colts and geldings ! will meet at six furlongs in the Cincinnati Trophy. A week later will see a renewal of j the Latonia Oaks for three-year-old fillies, and it will be contested over a mile and an ! eighth, a furlong less than the distance at [ which it was decided last year. The Inde-! pendence Handicap, for three-year-olds and j upward at a mile and an eighth, will fea-j ture the final days program on July 4. Although nominations to the Derby and others of the Latonia stakes close tomorrow ! at midnight, entries posted in the mails up ! until that time will be accepted. They prob-1 ably will be made public some time next week. _ •
