PREPARING FOR HANDICAP. Seven Candidates for Decoration. Day Feature at Hawthorne Track Given Trial Gallops. CICERO, 111., May 27. Seven candidates and intended starters in the ,000 added Decoration Day Handicap, Saturdays stake feature at Hawthorne, had their final important training for the race under fine conditions at that course Wednesday morning. They were Shandon Farms Official and Bright Light; E. K. Brysons Carvola; J. E. Hughes Silent Shot; C. M. Feltners Buck Langhorne and Mrs. E. Denemarks Corinto and Chasar. Each worked a mile, a distance one-sixteenth of a mile shorter than that over which Saturdays race will be decided. From a time standpoint the Bryson filly; which gave a fine performance in winning her engagement on the opening day of the meeting, carried off honors, although the trials of the others were just as impressive. Carvola was timed in 1:41, the three-quarters in 1:15, and was well in hand throughout. Trainer B. S. Michell worked Chasar and Corinto together and his orders that they "work along well within themselves" were expertly carried out. Running head and head together throughout, they travelled the distance in 1:42, the first three-quarters in 1:16. The Shandon pair also appeared in company but the three-year-old, Bright Light, greatly overshadowed his older stablemate and in turning the eight furlongs in 1:42, led Official by about four lengths at the close of the trial. Official was timed in 1:43. Neither was subjected to pressure. A strong finish marked the trial of Silent Shot, the Hughes horse completing a mile in 1:43 after having ran the first three-quarters in 1:17. He also worked in handy fashion. Buck Langhorne, timed in 1:43, breezed throughout. He ran three-quarters in 1:17.
